I am trying to post a picture for my avatar, but when I click save, it says “ load failed”. I have read that the picture needs to be approved first, but it won’t save the changes I make. When I leave the edit page, I get a warning that my profile changes are not saved. How do I post an avatar if it won’t save it?

Perhaps you should try again when the system is stable. Today has been a very glitchy day

Just to cover a base, there is a "save changes" button at the bottom of the page. You need to click that after uploading your avatar. If it's successfully uploaded, there should be a message saying your ava is awaiting approval after you hit the save button.

Don't worry if you see a blank/old avatar on subsequent visits to the page. So long as the "awaiting approval" message is still there, it's still in the queue. Changes like this are low priority, so it may take a good little while. Only if the message vanishes and your ava hasn't changed should you worry.

Note: If there's any nudity in the ava ( no matter how artistic you feel it is ) it's not going to get approved.

Clicking the “save changes” button is what triggers the “load failed” warning. It won’t save the image after it’s uploaded.

2048 pixels across? That is enormously bigger than needed for an avatar.

I've seen another thread on this earlier today but the error was 'failed to fetch'

I wonder If it is connected to the persistent 503 errors.

Yes.

They both boil down to the same error. The issue stems from something called "Cross-Origin Resource Sharing", or CORS.
From what I can see in the console, the CORS header field for the request by the server is missing data. Thus the "failed to fetch" error. If you try to circumvent that by either telling your browser to ignore CORS or routing that packet through a server that adds the CORS field, you get the "load failed" error.

I tried both, hoping to outsmart the system, but I am only a novice in that regard. The error has been around for a few weeks now, and I think we just have to wait for the admins to fix it.
