Looking for a good, cheap outlet for PCs?

low price PC

Go to ubid.com. I've bought several computer and other electronics over the years with no issues. It's an auction site, mostly factory refurbs with warantees on most. Just read the details carefully and you'll be fine.

Thanks again, to all who posted with ideas.

I made some calls about Gateway and found their prices were a little too steep for me right now. With the help of a friend, I found a few Dell systems that might work wonders. I'm also going through all the sites mentioned here and looking especially at the refurbs.

Thanks. I will let you know what I wind up getting. :)

Gateway = If its broke send it to BFE South Dakota and we will see what we can do with it in a couple weeks.

If you even consider it, I will personally drive you outside their corporate office and smack you upside the head with a sock filled with flour... ;)

Unfortunately I have had to had mine custom built which is always a headache but usually costs less than a new system. As important as the computer is in my line of work (and yours) it is the last thing you want to go the cheap on.

Look at it this way..You are having open heart surgery and the surgeon says "I can use this piece of equipment costing $1000 or I can use a coathanger I found in the third floor lounge and only charge you $100. Both will do the job just fine". Which one ya gonna choose?? :)

Good point, there. I guess I want to go the cheap route in order to keep a cushion in my bank account, frankly. I HATE spending big money. I mean, I hate it. I like to see it in my bank account for a rainy day.

But of course, you get what you pay for, right?

Ahem. Well...LOL.

Thank you for that pep-talk/rant. Maybe I SHOULD rethink this thing?

I suppose if this computer will hold out for another few months, I can go with something much more expensive.

Hey, Hooch! Once I break the seven-figure mark, I will not only buy you that dream machine, but I will deliver it to you in the trunk of your very own brand-new Lexus. You even get to choose the color.

What are friends for?

Well, thanky Ms Sheath for the offer of the Lexus, but that is a little too uppity for me. I ain't accustomed to that level of nicety. However I DO have my heart set on a 1972 - 1978 Triumph Spitfire. We'll talk. :)

(And dammit, woman! It ain't gotta be "much more expensive"... just a leetle tiny bit more. Trust me.)

Why didn't I think of the Spitfire? My mistake...

You still get to pick the color. ;)

The Spitfire was all foam and no beer.

If you're going to go the route of a boomer-era British sports car, get one that had a few cajones. Consider the TR6 if you must go with Triumph, or the Austin Healey 3000. The big Healey had big ones, made of steel, and it could make a Jag look pathetically over-priced out on the road.

Just my little old HO. :D

Oh, and don't expect the car to hold any fluid, including electricity by the way. The Brits just didn't know how to seal anything.

Sheath,

Stay away from Emachines, I have had nothing but problems with them.

I would go with Dell over gateway.

Okay, personally? I've experienced life with two different Emachines and never had a single problem with either. The second one is what I'm typing on right now. I've successfully managed to do everything I ever wanted on it, including upgrade the video card with absolute minimal problems.

So, I have no problems with Emachines.

Still, Sheath, you know all my suggestions. So I'll shut up.

I've got an HP and a Dell. Haven't really had much trouble with either one of them. In fact I'm using my 5 year old Hp right now. Sure its underpowered by today standards but its reliable and does just about everything I want it to do. The only problems I've ever had with it were software related, Win98 isn't the most stable of programs. I also had some problems after installing a newer version of McAfee. If I remember right I spent about $800 for my HP, got it brand new at Wal-Mart. Friends of mine spent $1500 to $2000 on computers at about that time and some of them had trouble from day one. Also I got a Dell earlier this year, bought it slightly used from my sister. So far it has not given me any problems. I think if you get a good brand name computer you shouldn't have too much trouble. What causes trouble for most people isn't the workmanship of the computer but what it get exposed to after its brought home. I've got a second computer for that reason. The HP is sorta a sacrificial computer if it gets killed because of something I download or I fuck up and open an e-mail attachment from hell; its not too big of a deal.

Refurbished Dell

I've purchased four refurbished pc's from Dell and have been extremely happy with them...and all shipped for free during a special. You can get a lot of machine for around $700.
