Makeovers for men

True, generally black lipstick goes only with black or bleach-white hair, and blue lipstick goes only with blue or bleach-yellow hair (and blue eye makeup). But anyway it's impossible to recommend colors without seeing a color picture of your face, including showing your eye color.

Dunno if you are thinking about getting color done at a salon, but its waaay cheaper to do it yourself if you have a nice bathroom with a shower and a mirror and you are not afraid of getting a few drops of dye here and there. But before you decide to dye your hair, consider the downside that dye weakens hair, bleach weakens it twice as much, and if you bleach and die your hair repeatedly it tends to get plasticky and break. Also right after dying you have to sleep with a towel over your pillowcase unless you don't care if you stain it, you hair will smell funny for 2-3 days, and unless you're way more dexterous (entirely possible, I am a clutz) than me you will have a few blotches of color on your forehead that take about 2 days to do away.

Well, this weekend, I begin taking the plunge. Since the photo I posted was taken, I've had 3-4 weeks' extra hair growth time; it's beginning to get to a length I like, but because it was originally cut to be a short style, I'm going to need to have the sides tided up considerably to suit. I'm steeling myself to ask for a more feminine styling, in order to soften the angles of my face a little; however, I hope that the salon is reasonably quiet at the time - Sheffield is very blue-collar, and tolerance doesn't stretch far. I'm also going to start stocking up on rudimentary make-up, and over the weekend - depending on my condition - I'll have a go at trying a look or two. Whether I post photos or not depends very much on the level of success I have!

Wish me luck! :rose:
Be lucky, AS!

Have you considered finding a unisex salon, with a male stylist?
They'd probably be ok with any request.

Also, ref lips - I'd say initially go with a clear or pale peachy-pink gloss.
You can get a "roll-on" one that also makes your lips tingle, and "plumps" them a little. inflate your lips
You do have a beautifully shaped mouth.

oh yes, on the subject of smooth legs? fine grade sandpaper works a treat! :D

Thank you for your advice! I was actually thinking of asking about plumping, to give myself fuller lips... Though, gorgeous as he is, I wouldn't want to end up looking like Pete Burns (for those unfamiliar, see attachment - Pete's the prettier one... bishounen?)

Just cause you said Bishounen I am going to assume pete is the one trying to look like a prostitute.

Don't go for that, I'm not kidding that is one of those faces you only see on professional sex providers. Well I suppose also on a woman who just went to see a plastic surgeon, an hour ago.

The guy with is cute, I wouldn't mind his phone number. ;)

Black and well any seriously dark lipstick is a goth look. If your not going gothy don't get black. I think that most likely a nice peach or slightly darker than your regular lips lipstick would be the best bet. Get that kissable look without looking like you have makeup. ;)

I know you probably couldn't but I think you should find a gal pal there near enough to you too visit each other often so you can get tips off her, she can see your face and all the imperfections that we can't. Trust me on the imperfections part, we all look and we all think of ways to fix them. ;)

ROFL! Oh, goodness! You're right... It didn't occur to me until you said it (apart from the plastic surgery bit - if you google images of him, you'll find that he's changed almost as much as Michael Jackson since first coming into the public eye...)!

And the guy he's with is taken - it's his hubby...

But thanks for the advice, as always. I think I should try and cultivate a girly friendship - not just for the make-up tips, but because it occurs to me that I could do with having some more female friends...

hey AS-hope you don't mind me butting in here:D

on the lip plumping

benefit do a good one-its called lip plump-you can get it from debenhams but be aware-they really tingle for ages-although depending on when you use it-that could be an interesting side effect!!;)

Hey Janey - You're very welcome! The more the merrier! Any advice DEFINITELY welcomed.

Actually, I love a bit of lip-tingle ;); have you any idea of the price range (have to ask given that it's Debs...) - I can see that the outlay is going to be considerable (you get out what you put in, right?), so if I can save a few pennies here and there it'd be good...

Going back to emap's contribution, it occurs to me that in this country the androgynous look can tip over into self-parody and becomes a little grotesque. It's like (emphasise - "like", I don't say it is) a masquerade, and only a thin line exists between andro and drag-queen. For an example, try googling images of Jodie Harsh and comparing those with the photo of Pete Burns I posted earlier.

That's not what this is about. While it may Pete's way of expressing things, this is definitely about my identity, and what I want to get out of being androgynous. I'm accruing a heck of a team of advisers, and I want to do you all proud.

it's not cheap-about 15 quid but boots do a cheaper version for about a tenner-i think for these though you do definitely get what you pay for-the cheaper ones just don't work as well and i find its not like lip gloss where you have to keep reapplying so they do tend to last

good luck with the hair cut btw:D

Thanks for the wishes, Janey! For one reason or another the weekend hasn't, and won't, go as planned unless I can get out tomorrow... So it's going to be another week's growth!

Hmm... Boots sounds good. I don't know why, but going into Debenhams' and John Lewis's always makes me feel a bit cheap... And while there may be some truth to that, I don't need to be reminded!

Okay... It's been a while since I posted on M4M. I felt I ought to update things a little... Unfortunately, for reasons it would take way too long to explain, I wasn't able to get the things done that I said I was going to. However, this weekend, I have started taking cautious steps toward my goal. I bought some bangles, took a look for things to go round my neck (couldn't find anything that suited, though), and started taking a look at the - somewhat overwhelming - array of cosmetics available. I've also started studying application, checking out various websites to get tips on how to do things like apply eye-liner and eye shadow.

Which all leads to next weekend, and a girlie day out with a very kind lady who has offered to help me find my way about in this maze. As she'll be seeing me in the flesh, as it were, she'll also be able to give me advice on colouring for lippy, eye-shadow, powder, and the like...

Personally, I can't wait. It may seem a shallow indulgence, but I really do need this, and once again, I'm grateful for the love that people have shown by offering their support.

I hope I'll have some pictures to post soon!

I'll certainly keep the thread updated.

Best wishes,

 AS

Bishounen just means pretty boy, so its entirely possible to have a fictional race be described as being beautiful. Its not like men who are more beautiful than handsome are imaginary lol, they certainly exist in real life, they're just not common in western society since some time in the 1800s when it became the fashion for all men to have short hair and wear boring clothes. There are other cultures, some african and native american ones for example, where it is traditional for men to wear jewelry, body paint, feathers, quill-embroidered clothes, oiled and braided hair, etc. Pre-1800s you can see the same thing in western fashion with men wearing velvets, silks, jewels, feathers, and curling their hair. I don't think fashion will ever go back that way since ornamentation on men has come to imply effeminacy, which for the most part neither straight nor gay men want to seem feminine. But it seems like every subculture that pops up goes for more ornamentation and flashy clothes to try to mark themselves as different: hippies, whatever you call that disco-afro-platform shoes group, punks, goths, emos, etc.

I like this post... Is Bishounen a new fangled word that only refers to anime?

Hi Anglo  I hope you achieve all you're going for. I've come to realize lately that I'm about as hedonistic an animal as they come as well...

Please stay in touch...

Oh and for what my opinion is worth? Don't do the Goth unless you really feel it. Blue and black lips belong to the dead... Don't do the whore thing either, unless she calls to you.

But I'd love to see some red lips on you.

Bishounen is a Japanese word. Bi means beautiful, shounen means boy. The version for a slightly older person is bisienen, sienen means man. The word is primarily used in English to refer to anime and manga, yes, however in Japanese it's normally used to describe real people and some people also use it in English that way (especially to talk about prettyboys of Japanese or other eastern ethnicity).

My goodness! I don't post for ages, and then two replies almost instantly...

Anyone would think you're subscribing to this thread! :) As always, you're very welcome, and I'm glad for your comments.

It's become a part of my everyday mental monologue.

So here, for everyone, is another of my bishounen in action...

Oh Anglo sexon!!!!

All this andro scene is fucking great!!!
Turns me on big time!!!
And you have all these sexy women helping you too!!!!!
Such knowledge and grace from them!
God!!!!
You can't lose with this!

Just my opinion.

Take care my friend.

in response to a request

for exfoliation of skin and moisturisation at the same time

salt or sugar scrubs especially with an oil base such as sanctuary's salt scrub or the body shop does a good sugar scrub too but i find salt less abbrasive. use all over the body but especially good for a start to a manicure-scrubbing and sloughing dead skin and letting the oil sink into the skin to really scent and moisturise the skin-soak hands first in warm soapy water, pat dry then apply in small circular movements-can also be very sensual and intimate to do for someone too!!

alternatively-you can make your own-

get a small kilner jar and just use ordinary fine table salt-its about 40p for a bag-
find a nice neutral oil such as almond or coconut-always being aware of any nut allergies, very mild olive oil can be good too if you like the smell!
place the salt in the jar and just pour the oil into it too
stir the salt around-you're going for a thick consistency so judge the amount accordingly
then add your favourite perfume oil or a little lavender essential oil-if using other essential oils always check for any contra indications and dilution instructions-some are not safe to use undiluted
i like body shop sandlewood oil

use as directed above-on your body-scoop a lovely great handful and apply in circular motions in the bath or shower-be wary of slipping!!

pat skin dry

enjoy the softness!!

hope this is helpful AS!!

Thanks for your encouragement, BiSmoker! I couldn't agree more about androgyny; it brings up a whole sense of uncertainty and awakens the curiosity... A whole other dimension that adds to the excitement of entering into an ageement that you wouldn't get on a scene where the codes are rigidly defined and there are certain expectations.

I am lucky to have the generosity of some wonderfully knowledgeable people, and to them I'm forever indebted. Again - I agree; with such assistance, losing isn't an option - how could I?:rose:

It may be a cliche...

... that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but it's true.

Maybe some would think that, for me, that step came when I first had the idea of setting up this thread; I view it, thus far, as actually having been making sure that I was adequately prepared - getting a good map of the road, so to speak, and ensuring that I had adequate provisions for the journey. Knowledge is power, and when making a foray into the unknown, it's the flame that lights your way, makes you feel safe knowing that the next step isn't going to plunge you into a pitfall which may discourage you from further exploration.

And in the light of that flame, I have now taken the first step. Thankfully, I had someone there to hold my hand; to that person, I express my deepest thanks - you know who you are, and my gratitude is a matter of public record. To help me find my way amid the myriad various products which could, or could not, be of use; to be there to not let me back away from myself when making my selections; to make the whole process fun - which, after all, is the best thing that could happen on a voyage of self exploration. You held the demons at bay; you made the road smooth, and you gave me a compass. Thank you.

As I write, I'm still soaking up the feelings of my first exfoliation; admiring the finish on my nails (okay, call me vain if you wish!); and very, very happy with my first M4M. I've discovered the uses of moisturiser, powder, lip plumper, blusher, eyeshadow, and concealer. And, do you know what? I'm overjoyed. There are those who may shrug their shoulders and say, "So what? I do this every day; there's no big secret." Lucky you; I wish I'd known that years ago. But this quickly in my journey, I've found a door; I've unlocked it, stepped through to find... Another door. I'll wait by that door until I've fully enjoyed the sensation of having opened the first; then, I'll find the key for it, open it, and go on the next stage of the journey...

:heart::rose::kiss: AS

That's good.I like that.It brings up possibilities in many other realms too.
It could be very universally applied. No pun intended.

Thank you for sharing, Janeyl!

This thread is just so interesting I feel compelled to bump it back to the top :)

A good bump, indeed!

Saying good morning to Anglo. I haven't seen you for a while. Hope you're well :rose:
