"I think everybody cares about the band, and we all want to make it work. It seems like it could be really stressful, though, if you're doing more work than anybody else. Do you think it would help if we were all better friends outside of practices?"
Travis paused in thought, not sure how to answer that question. It wasn't that he didn't know what his answer would be, but more that it was how to phrase it. "Yeah. That's why I brought up the equality thing, too." He met her gaze with a look of concern. "Generally when a girl joins an all guy band there can be a tendency for her to play favorites...especially when she knows some of them already. I don't want any of them thinking you don't like them."
He saw a concerned look in her eyes as she responded. "I want to help you, if you think there's anything I can do to make the band's morale better."
In response Travis laid a quick hand on her shoulder. "The other guys enjoy playing in the band, but they aren't looking out for the long term future of it like I am. They think it's just about music, but I know better." He smiled at her. "I always think things through from every possible angle - not only for the band, but for our publicity, our touring, our money, everything." He stopped deliberately. "Just keep doing whatever I tell you to do."
With that, they'd reached the liquor store, and Travis held the door for Candy as she stepped in. He waved at the shop owner - a fan of theirs who frequently gave them discounts, which wasn't what you'd expect from someone around 40ish years old - and was about to help get the beers when voices caught his yes.
"Travis! Hey man, how's it going?"
He turned and saw a group of three guys smiling at him, and he went over to bang fists with them. They were university students - 2 white, one black, all in their final year - wearing hoodies and loose sweats, and three of the biggest fans the band had. Considering their loyal fan base could almost be counted on the fingers and toes of everyone in the store at the moment, Travis never missed an opportunity to engage them.
Marco and Will were grabbing the beers as Shawn loomed near the entrance, apparently wanting to leave as quickly as possible.
"Two good days of practice." he replied quickly.
"We heard about Carter, man..." said the second guy, a black student with his head hanging low. "How'd you fill his spot so quickly?"
"Two people." replied Travis. He motioned to Candy, who was standing a few steps away, to join him as he pointed at Marco. "That's Marco, our new guitar player." He put his arm around Candy, hugging her to him. "And this..." he grinned for effect, rubbing her torso with his free hand. "...is Candy, our new singer."
He let the guys shake her hand as they eyed her up and down, not being as restrained about is the band had been.
"She's hot stuff...." said one. "Good choice, Travis."
"Candy's been pretty wild in practice so far.." He responded. "Really knows her stuff, and fitting in."
"I like her shirt, too...my sister's been wanting one of those." said the third guy, who'd been silent up until this point.
"Well, it's an older one - in fact, I think this one's out of print; we only got a few hundred. And now we'll be getting new ones since...." Travis had to keep from widening his eyes, events coming together to give him an opportunity to push their new lead singer a little farther. She'd been drinking, and he looked down at her. The guys were waiting near the door patiently; knowing how much Travis liked his ground level contact, but he knew that even their patience would run out fairly quickly.
Unless what he was about to try worked. In which case, he imagined they'd let him chat up the fans until the store was hit by a comet.
"...well, since Carter left us. Give us a sec, will ya?" He pulled Candy back a few feet, and they resumed their liquor buying, as he leaned in to whisper to Candy so that only she could hear him.
"Do you trust the band, Candy? That we'll always look out for you, no matter what?" His tone was deadly serious, and the look in his eyes even more so, as he continued.
"Do you trust me, Candy? You said you'd do whatever I told you to do, if it was for the band. Did you mean it?"
Her reply was exactly what he was looking for, and he spoke quietly into her ear, but urgently, struggling to contain the adrenaline that was coursing through him as he gave the harshest test yet to his new lead singer.
"You're going to walk over to those three guys. You're going to look them in the eye, take off your shirt, and give it to them. After they get a good look at you, we'll leave."
