Male role recast - new version of story coming up ...
Prologue:
Mary stared up at the fine pattern made by the candle on the ceiling above her head and sighed softly as she stretched her limbs. Around her the bedding cocooned her with warmth and security, her nightgown had long since been smoothed back into a respectable position as her new husband had rolled off her and slept content. Somehow she had expected him to spend the whole night with her, yet she was relieved of course when after only a half hour to gather his strength, he had kissed her and with a murmur of endearments made his way across to his own bedchamber and left her to consider her new status as Mrs Williams.
How could she fail but be pleased with her lot? She had come far from her humble beginnings, in fact, as an abandoned infant whose parentage could be guessed at, but never confirmed she had been taken in and raised as a young lady of respectability who knew her place, was biddable and dutiful and had as a reward for her humility married way beyond anyone’s expectations, even her own!
She sighed and closed her eyes. Even enduring the more ... private ... obligations of the marital bed had been less onerous than she had imagined. The discomfort had been tolerable, the pain, brief and she would soon learn to counter her embarrassment in the knowledge that she owed her duty to Edward now he was her husband. As a wife she knew he would care for her and she in turn would suffer his attentions with good grace.
