On Murat Bay, Ceduna is a popular stop-over on a journey across the Nullarbor Plain. Originally called Denial Bay, and situated 12 km. west of the present town, it takes its name from the aboriginal 'chidoona', meaning a resting place. Some ruins of the settlement can be seen today.
There are several motels and caravan parks to cater to the many travellers passing through and there are BBQ facilities on the foreshore. Fishing, and touring the local bays, 4WD and helicopter tours along the coast are popular past times, and whales can often be seen off the coast during the breeding season.
Murat Bay was named by Franch explorer Nicholas Baudin in 1802.
