Memories on the Ozarks (Close)

The frustration and anger she had been feeling since yesterday came pouring out in torrents, and were she looking at herself from a distance, probably would have been ashamed at her actions. As it was, the passion between them was unaffected by her usual timidity. Biting his neck, she moved against him with a steady rhythm. She had been so close before she’d moved that it took almost no time for that familiar euphoria to begin building inside of her.

Her arms dropped her upper half, her pussy tightened around his cock as she came. Burying her face in the crook of his neck, she cried out in ecstasy as her own storm piqued.

Dan weathered her storm well. He was lost in the passion that was them. When she came and fell against him, he allowed her a moment to recuperate before he pulled her back and began to kiss her everywhere he could reach.

His lips found hers and their tongues fought for purchase. Dan worked his way down Becca’s chin to her neck and breasts. She was in the perfect position for him, still impaled on his cock. Dan felt her begin to grind against him again and he matched her stroke for stroke. His hands helped guide her motion where they gripped her ass. A couple of his fingers found her ass crack and used her pussy juices to lube her all over and he played with her asshole until he came deep within her, gasping.

Becca felt exhausted, but her body was still too excited to stop just yet. Daniel’s body spurred her back on, feeling refreshed by his kisses and his hands massaging her passion. When his hands moved to her backside, she barely noticed, but only pushed further onto him. The smells of sex had confiscated the air surrounding them in the storm shelter.

When she felt his hot liquid inside of her, she moaned at the feeling of being so unified with another being. She was left wanton and pulled off him. Sitting to the side of his legs, she pulled on his hand so that he followed her forward.

“Make me cum again.” It was a command, not a question as she laid back on the bed, but there was pleading in her eyes.

Danny’s cock had just begun to grow soft; he looked at it and looked back to her. “If you make it hard again, I’ll give you exactly what you need darlin.”

With that, he leaned over and started kissing her again, working from her lips and roaming at leisure. His tongue traced the contours of her body from her neck down to her clitoris and back again. As he explored, he felt the heat begin to build again and soon his manhood was rock hard and ready to do as she wished.

Becca was in too much need to play games at the moment, but she didn’t have to wait too long. Whimpering, her hands twisted in the blankets of the cot. She was prepared to lose herself in all their sexual glory when the beeping of Dan’s phone startled her.

“Danny? You there?” Matt’s voice came in through the static, and there was a hint of panic in his voice. Looking down at where Daniel was perched over her, there was a mixture of relief and poutiness in her face.

“You should answer him.”

Danny was rubbing the head of his dick along the slit of her pussy, from the base of her hole to her clitoris and back again, watching as his cock began to glisten with her juices. He was just preparing to plunge his pole into her when she pointed out the voice over his cell.

“Matt? Matt?” Dan was practically yelling into the phone, his cock swaying to and fro in front of Becca as if she were a snake charmer playing her seductive rhythms. Over the radio came more white noise and Matt’s voice.

“Danny? Is Beth…”

“… storm’s over…”

“… you ok? Shelter door…”

There was a pounding from one corner of the buckled shelter door that caused them both to jump a little. Danny tried to get back though to Matt on the cell. “Matt? Listen. Becca is here with me. Yeah, yeah. We’re trapped in here. Get us out.”

Danny turned to Becca. “I suppose we best get some clothes on. Else ol’ Matt’ll get another eyeful.”

Becca sat up, watching him with anticipation. She nearly screeched as somebody knocked on the shelter door, but held it in. When he turned and spoke to her, Becca nodded and began picking up her clothing. Getting dressed, she couldn’t help but sneak coy looks in Daniel’s direction. Her boots were the last thing to go on. Standing up, she moved towards the back of the shelter as loud bangs and strains were heard.

It took nearly a half hour, but finally, the door was yanked up and the dim light from outside washed away the dim light. Becca squinted at how bright it was compared to the darkness they’d been in, even though the sky outside was still rather dark. They made their way up top, and Becca inhaled sharply before turning around.

Her knees gave out and she fell to the ground as she stared at the wooden pile that had been on this land for generations. All of Joe’s memories and history had been wiped out, and the home she had come to love was gone. Covering her mouth, she felt the urge to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come.

Matt was the first one to thrust his hand through the opening after the backhoe ripped the caved in door off its hinges. Dan helped Becca out first and he followed right after. Jonny was there with a dried blood on his face and neck and a few other hands had long faces. Dan got out a “Is everyone all…” before he saw Becca crumple to the ground and it drew his attention to the ruined main house.

“Becca…” Dan’s voice cracked as he bent to catch her under her arms and draw her to his arms. At this point, Danny needed Rebecca’s strength probably as much as she would need his. “As the ol’ man would say, it’s only things we still have our lives and each other. Everything else can be replaced.”

Everything within him wanted to drop to his knees and scream at the sky.

“Jonny? Matt? Is everyone ok? Did your farm make it through?”

Everything inside of Becca had frozen at the ruined house, images of herself growing up throughout the summers flashing in her head. She had no control over the weather, but she felt like she had disappointed Joe’s memory by the crumbled home. One fleeting horrific thought crossed her mind that the tornado was a way to get back at her for feeling angry at Joe.

“There are things in there that can’t ever be replaced.” Her voice came out trembling and small, and she pulled closer to Daniel, feeling cold despite the warm weather.

“It didn’t touch my farm.” Feeling awkward, Matt answered Dan’s question, reaching down and putting his hand on Dan’s shoulder. “We should get a doctor to look at that.”

Matt’s words barely registered and Dan’s body shook. Matt's words didn't matter so much anyway, there was no way Dan was going anywhere right now.

His thoughts were as fragmented as the main house that stood in parts before them. A small portion of rational thought flickered within, You’re in shock, good buddy. The small voice spoke to him as it did when he was back on the streets, running through the night from his old man, those nights when a much smaller Danny had learned that there were monsters and there were Monsters. His old man was bad, be he wasn’t as bad as they came, not even close.

The main house was a wreck, with ninety percent of the outer walls missing entirely. It was the damnedest thing. Most of the interior walls were still there, even some of the pictures looked undisturbed. It was as if the structure was nothing more than a child’s building set and the kid got tired of having a roof and outer walls.

Dan had to stifle a chuckle that threatened to bubble forth. Instead, he found himself clutching at Rebecca. The words of Joe filled him again and they came forth before he even realized that he was speaking aloud. “It ain’t what you got in your hands, but what you got in yer heart.”

Becca sat in a stunned silence, her attention refocusing on Daniel when he spoke so randomly. Her eyebrows furrowed as she realized how pale he had gotten. She felt a twinge of guilt, knowing that things shouldn’t have gone as far as they had with him being injured. Reaching up, she rested her hand on his head. His skin was clammy.

“Do we still have a truck?” Looking up at Matt and Jon, she realized by the look on their faces that her truck had been trashed.

“No, but I have mine.” Matt nodded towards the open field where his truck still sat.

“All right. Let’s get him to the hospital.” Not asking Dan’s opinion on the matter, she helped Jon and Matt get him to the truck.

“Jon, is everybody else okay?”

“Yeah, and the barn is untouched.”

“Good. Will you stick around?” Looking up at him, Becca was trying to push aside the desire to break down in tears.

“Absolutely.” Nodding, he headed towards his truck to make a thorough drive of the farm.

Becca crawled in beside Dan, and Matt hopped in behind the wheel and started up the truck. Sighing, she leaned her head against the window, not quite sure what to do from here. Matt had to drive a little slower than usual to the hospital with all the debris in the road.

The trek across the muddy roads was jostling Dan something fierce, it was as if every rut and pothole had been made ten times worse by the torrents of rain and wind. Matt was a pro behind the wheel, however, and they eased slowly toward the emergency clinic.

Dan’s hand gripped white-knuckled onto the dash of the pickup and his head began to throb and pulse. His eyes narrowed and he winced with a hiss, unable to keep the breath within his lungs. Suddenly, Matt let out an “Oh shit, hold on!” and the world as viewed out the front window spun end over end. A rush of mud and debris shad slid down the mountain side and into the truck, easily toppling it over and down the other embankment.

The ride was unpleasant, and only served to jostle her nerves all the more. Clouds were still hovering above in the sky, but the weather had seemed to become less of a threat. Becca kept a close eye on Daniel, concerned about his possible head trauma. Matt’s voice cut through her daze, but she had no time to react.

The truck was pushed to the edge of the paved road, and tilted towards the embankment. It took less than half a minute for the truck to tip onto its side and begin its trek end over end downward. Becca’s screams filled the truck as the flipped over. Her lap belt prevented her from falling out, but it didn’t stop her from flinging forward. Her head cracked against the dashboard, silencing her scream. The sound of crunching glass filled her ears as the windows busted and rained over them.

When the truck finally came to a stop, Becca drifted into a state of unconsciousness.

Matt’s heart was pounding in his ears, and he was scared to believe the truck had really stopped. The truck had stopped upside down, and the blood was beginning to run to his head.

“Becca? Dan?” Reaching down, he unbuckled his seatbelt and tried to keep himself from hitting the top of the truck too hard.

Danny spun end over end and his mind took him to one summer when Joe had taken him to World’s of Fun in Kansas City. A brief smile flashed on his mouth as he thought that those roller coasters had nothing on this ride. He banged his head a few more times until the truck finally came to a rest upside down. Cautiously, Dan looked back and forth. He was still unable to hear much of anything. Becca was unconscious and Matt had just undone his seat belt with one shaky hand bracing him against the roof.

“Wait, Matt, don’t…” was all Dan could get out before the shifting of Matt’s weight caused the truck to teeter and wobble atop the loose dirt and rubble. Dan didn’t have any idea where they were or what the situation was. For all he knew, they could be sitting on the edge of a ravine just waiting to topple to certain death.

Matt was lying at an awkward angle, afraid to breathe. Dan was still trying to get his bearings as he heard Becca groan. He placed a hand against her and said “Shh. Just be still there, darlin’. No sudden movements.” Dan motioned to Matt to be still. He wanted to find out if he could unbuckle himself without sending them into a further slide.

Dan was able to determine that Matt’s side of the vehicle was facing the upward slope, which left his side leaning toward the down slope. His window was still present, although it was completely covered in spidercracks. He couldn’t make anything out at all.

“Matt, try and keep us level and I’ll unbuckle too.” Fuck If it was just him, he’d have already acted. Hell, if it had been just him and Matt, they’d both be out of the truck or sliding toward the hills below. “Do or die.” Dan muttered as he used his pocket knife to cut the seat belt and eased himself to the roof of the cab, using sheer upper body strength. He sighed in relief as his weight eased down but then swallowed hard as he felt the roof give way beneath him. There ain’t much solid beneath me. Dan’s eyes grew wide with the realization.

He moved slowly over beneath Becca, seeking firmness beneath his legs as he went. It seemed that the cab of the truck was only partially supported by the ground beneath. Most of the truck’s ass end was hanging out over the edge of a severe dropoff. With each movement, the truck teetered a bit and they could hear more dirt moving. Matt slowly moved up to a semi-kneeling position and together they cut Becca down and eased her between them.

“Matt, we gotta get that window out so we can get out of here.” Dan said quietly, as if the sound of his voice would send the truck careening. With slow pressure, they pushed the mostly shattered driver’s side window out. Dan told Matt to try to squeeze through the opening so he could help drag the mostly incoherent Becca out after him. The tone of his voice and the severity in his eyes told Matt that there was no arguing here.

Matt shimmied through the tiny opening and the truck groaned against the loose rocks, sliding about a half a foot. Dan felt his heart leap into his throat and he whispered, “I love you Becca,” as he pushed her toward the window so Matt could pull her out. Matt hooked his hands in Becca’s arm pits and heaved; sweat breaking out on his brow. The truck was too close to him and Matt’s boots slipped in the loose soil, pushing against the truck.

Becca came loose of the truck and the truck groaned again as its weight shifted once again, throwing Dan back onto his butt; the final lurch taking its toll against the loose gravel beneath him. His throat clenched up, silencing the yell that wanted to rise. Dan locked his arms as the truck slid down and over the edge. All he could thing about was his Becca.

She’d felt this pain before. Reaching up, Becca gingerly touched her forehead, and pulled back sticky, wet fingers. The blood caused her stomach to tighten as a nauseous wave brought her to her knees. Looking around, her hazel eyes were glazed over as she searched for the source of her injuries.

“Rebecca, why do you make me do this to you?” Nicholae’s soft, British lilt ended her search as the blonde headed man stepped from the shadows. Whimpering, Becca pushed herself against the wall, silently wishing it would swallow her up. Nick shook his head as he tsked, his hand reaching out to caress the side of her face. It amazed her that he could so capable of such a gentle touch one moment, and be full of violent malice the next.

His hand slid up to her hair, and before she could act, he had grabbed her hair in his fist and was pulling her to her feet. She tried to fight him, but he was so much stronger than she was.

Whimpering, Becca’s eyes opened and the feeling of her blood rushing to her head created a thickness that was suffocating her. Her vision was blurry, and there was a ringing in her ears. Dan’s voice barely registered in her head, and she felt hysteria beginning to pile up inside of her. She couldn’t remember what had happened or where they were, and she felt too fuzzy to get a handle on the situation.

As the two men moved slowly to get her down, pain stabbed her head and neck, causing her to cry out. The next moments were a blue to her, and she felt drugged up. She barely comprehended what was being said, and she went from leaning against Dan to being pulled up by Matt. As she was yanked through the truck, she watched as it slid down, her panic erupting as she had enough of a grasp on what was going on around her to know what was happening.

She landed on top of Matt, and felt his arms around her tighten. Sitting up, the blood rushed down, leaving her feeling dizzy and the queasiness from her dream strengthening into her reality.

“Dan!” Screaming, she made an attempt to scurry down to where the truck had slid, but Matt held her tight.

“Beth, stop. Stop, baby, stop.” Trying to speak gently, yet loud enough she could hear him over her frantic sobs. There was a sound of crunching metal, and then nothing. “Stay here.” Speaking firmly to her, he let go of her and crawled on his belly to the edge of where the truck had just been.
“Oh thank heavens.” Breathing a small sigh of relief, Matt looked down at the truck. It had slid about ten feet down, and even though it sat precariously against a group of trees. His mind whirred into motion as he looked around. “Beth, are you wearing a belt?” Turning back, he had to fight the urge to curl her up against him. She was ashen and her eyes had glazed over, and he could tell it was a struggle for her to remain conscious.

Becca looked up at him, his words not registering in her mind. She watched him as he moved towards her and lifted her shirt enough so that he could answer his own question. Without bothering to ask, or attempt to get her to act, he unbuckled her belt and slid it out of her jeans. He quickly did the same with his, and then combined the belts. Moving as quickly as he dared, Matt crawled half the distance down to the truck, relying on roots that had been dug up by the truck.

“Danny?” Calling down, he silently prayed that Dan was still all right. “Dan, if you can hear me, crawl out of the driver window. Move as quickly as you can.”

Becca rested her hand against her stomach as the sick feeling grew too intense. Turning her head, she vomited, her body beginning to tremble.

Thankfully the truck didn’t flip over again, neither was there a sudden plunge into the depths of nothingness. The truck slid to a stop with the heavy creaking of some trees as the passenger window finally gave way completely. The truck had come to an uneasy rest against a small group of birch saplings.

Dan heard Matt hollering for him and hope filled him. He pried his fingers loose from the seat and launched for the open driver’s side window. His shoulder caught the door frame as he went and Dan felt something give. With his good right arm, Dan snatched at the dangling belt buckle just as the trees gave way along with the truck and half of the ground beneath him. Sweat popped out all over his body as he stared up at Matt’s grimy face.

“Matt. Dunno how long I’m a last here bud.” Danny’s voice was short with pain filled effort. His left arm dangled uselessly at an odd angle while his feet scrambled for some purchase.

Matt couldn’t suppress a smile of relief when Daniel appeared from inside the truck. Thankful that all his years working on a farm had given him the upper body strength he needed to hold up his best friend, he gritted his teeth as he pulled. Groaning, it took him a few hard pressed moments to pull Daniel back up to where he was. When Daniel was safely beside him, Matt sat back, his chest heaving with the effort.

“Danny, I am getting too old to keep getting into these shenanigans with you.” Swallowing, he shook his head as he reached into his pocket. Luckily, his cell phone had managed to stay tucked safely inside. Pulling it out, he called 9-1-1 and gave the dispatch their location. Hanging up the phone, he put a hand on Dan’s working arm to help him back up to Becca.

Becca had thrown up three times, and when she was convinced her body had nothing left to give, she’d rolled over and lay down. Curled up in a ball on her side, her eyes were closed as she found herself drifting into a welcoming dark abyss.

Dan chuckled with Matt as he rolled over, safely on the ground again. He suddenly realized he hadn’t checked on Becca. He rolled back over with a groan as pain washed through his shoulder, but still he managed to get to his feet. He found her curled up in a fetal position. “Becca?” He called out as he made his way over to her. He got no response, so he called out again. “Becca?!?”

He hurried to her side and he gently rolled her over and saw the huge lump on her forehead. Dan lightly slapped her face. “Becca, you gotta wake up hon. The paramedics are on their way, you gotta stay awake, baby.”

Danny was amazed to hear the sounds of sirens approaching. “Danny stay here with Becca, I’ll let them know where we are.” Matt climbed the little ridge and made his way as close to the road as he could get, hollering for them as they neared.

It wasn’t long before the paramedics had them all bustled up in the ambulance and were on their way to the emergency room in Poplar Bluff. After checking him out, the medics loaded Dan up with morphine to ease his shoulder. He did hear them talking to Matt, something about a dislocation and possible fractures.

Dan tried to ask about Becca, but couldn’t get anything out except for some mumblings so he soon gave up.

Becca was too far gone to wake up, despite Dan’s valiant attempts. Being carefully lifted up the embankment held no memory for her, nor did the ride to the hospital in the ambulance. She didn’t wake up until the next morning. When did awake, her vision was blurred, but within a few minutes, she could see clearly. Turning on her side, she groaned as the pounding in her head grew to a staccato forte.

“Hey there.” Matt’s soft voice greeted her as he leaned towards her bed. Reaching out, he took her hand in his, a look of relief and concern etched on his face.

“Where am I?” Her voice came out hoarse and soft as she looked around, looking confused.

“You’re at the hospital.” He kept his voice low as he spoke, and his eyes watched her closely. The doctor had told him that when Becca woke up, it would be very possible that she didn’t have a vivid memory about what had happened. The look of bewilderment on her face confirmed those earlier suspicions. “When the truck was swept off the road, you hit your head really hard. The doc said it gave you a concussion.”

Becca closed her eyes for a moment, trying her hardest to remember the accident. The only thing that came to mind was when they initially went off the road. Opening them, she looked at him fearfully.

“Where’s Dan?” She couldn’t keep the high pitch out of her tone when she spoke, a sudden vision of Daniel tumbling to a rocky ravine plaguing her.

“He’s at my house. He got out with just a dislocated shoulder. The doc fixed him up, drugged him up, and Jon came and picked him up. Jon’s staying with him to help him out. Even drugged up, it was World War III to get him to leave this hospital without you.” Smiling, he squeezed her hand before letting it go.

*

Another five hours had passed before the hospital would discharge her. Once they were convinced she would be all right to go home, Matt helped her to the SUV he usually drove. The truck they had been in was his work truck, and when the twister hit, he hadn’t bothered to switch out vehicles to go check on Dan and Becca.

“I didn’t call them and tell them we were coming.” As he drove, Matt gripped the wheel with both hands and sat up much straighter than he normally would have. He was more than a little uptight about driving. Reaching up, her motions slow, Becca pulled down the visor and opened the little mirror attached. Grimacing, her eyes looked her face over. They had removed the large bandage from her head and now she could see the stitches that held the gash together on her forehead. Her nose and face were bruised and swollen.

“I look like my ex got a hold of me.” Joking weakly, she closed the mirror and pushed the lid back up.

“They took X-rays to make sure you didn’t have any broken bones.” Looking a bit uncomfortable, Matt darted a quick glance at her before looking back at the road. “He was concerned because there were a lot of old breaks he could see in the x-ray. He showed it to me and I could see what he was talking about.”

Becca hadn’t meant to turn the topic serious, and when he brought up the topic, she looked away, staring out the window. Rather than comment, she pushed the bad memories out of her head.

“I’m surprised your wife let you stay at the hospital. And I’m surprised you left Dan in her clutches.” Smiling gently, she changed the subject.

“Actually, Sheila signed the divorce papers and left about four days ago. Right after I walked in and caught her having sex with one of your horse hands.” Smiling sadly, he shrugged his shoulders. “At least she left Kaelyn with me this time. I don’t know. Yeah, we used to fool around on each other a lot, but I’m at a point where I’m ready to grow up. I don’t think she is.”

“Matt, I’m sorry. Why didn’t you tell us?” Looking over at him, Becca felt bad for bringing it up at all/

“You guys had your own feud to worry about.”

“Maybe she’ll come back.”

“Even if she does, I’m not going to take her back.” Speaking matter-of-factly, Matt pulled the SUV into his drive and drove as tenderly as he could down the rutted path. He pulled up and parked, hopping out and moving to help Becca out. He wrapped an arm around her waist, and she leaned on him for support. Her entire body hurt and she moved slowly, relying on Matt heavily when they climbed the stairs.

It seemed an eternity before they reached the front door, and stepping inside, relief washed over her at the sight of Daniel, injured but alive.

Dan had sat in silence at Matt’s place, pissed off that Matt and Jonny had forced him from Becca’s side. When Matt and Becca came in he grit his teeth against the pain and gave Becca a kiss. He winced slightly at her heavy bruising and helped her to the couch.

“After a minute or two, we can head over to my cabin, Becca. We’ll be comfortable there until we get a new main house built. I made some fresh coffee, you want some?” Dan was deliberate in steering clear of Matt and Jonny. He was afraid if he had any interaction at all with either one of them, he’d end up breaking someone’s jaw.

Becca had the desire to throw her arms around Daniel, but she doubted she had the strength. Sitting down, she felt as if she’d just run a triathlon rather than walking a whole twenty feet from the vehicle to the living room. Reaching out, she gently rested her hand against his cheek, thankful to feel his warm skin beneath her fingertips. Between waking up in the hospital and finding out what had been the cause of it, and the nightmare with Nick, Daniel had never been a more welcoming sight.

“Aw, don’t pay him no mind, Beth. He’s still pouting because we forced him to come here and rest.” Jon offered a grin before he left the room, making it a point to get out Dan’s close proximity. Smiling, she looked at Daniel, her head shaking slightly.

“No, sweetie, I don’t.” She reached down and took his hand in both of hers, kissing his fingertips. “Don’t be angry with them. Too much has happened for people to be angry at one another. How’s your head and shoulder?”

Dan reached up and rapped his knuckles against his head. “Never better,” he lied with a smile. He wasn’t going to let things go, as they say; at least not when it comes down to his job. Right now, his main priority in life is to ensure Becca’s safety. If anyone is going to keep me from being able to do that, there will be hell to pay. His jaw clenched a bit and a flash of pain coursed over his skull.

Matt walked through the room and Dan thought he best get on out the door before his temper got the best of him. He knew he could kick Jonny’s ass one-handed; Matt’s he wasn’t so sure of, but his temper would give them a closer match. “Beth are you ready to get back to the cabin so we can relax? The insurance comp’ny has already sent out some crews to start the clearing process and the farm hands have already been out to the main house to salvage anything that might be worth keeping, they took most of it down to my – our place.”

Dan looked at Matt. “I’ll have one of the hands bring the truck back.”

The tension between the men did little to help calm her spirit. She was beginning to find it more difficult to focus, and the idea of sleep was calling out to her desperately. Her stomach tightened at the prospect of other people digging through the remains of Joe’s house. They didn’t know what to salvage and what to toss away, and the prospect of losing something valuable nearly made her ill. It took a great sense of self control not to demand that she be taken to the ruins and start piecing through everything herself.

“That’s fine.” Speaking softly, she stood up and slowly followed Dan out. She gave Matt a grateful half-smile before she sat down gingerly in the passenger’s seat. Once they were both seat belted in, Dan drove them to Dan’s cabin. When they passed the wreckage, Becca had to look away for fear of letting her emotions get the better of her. Daniel helped her inside as best he could, and she curled up on the side of the couch.

Dan’s cabin was one place they hadn’t spent a lot of time at. Truth be told, Becca had been a little uncomfortable with the prospect of going to Dan’s. It seemed like it was the one place on the farm they had not made love, and she had preferred to keep it that way. She found it hard to want to make love in a bed he had shared with so many others. Resting her head against the arm of the sofa, she closed her eyes to keep the light from making her head hurt.

“Dan? How many women have you brought back here?” Perhaps it was the pain medication that made her so bold, or the slight delirium setting in, but she suddenly felt the need to know.

Once they had gotten away from Matt’s place, Dan’s attitude settled some. He had struggled to get Becca out of the truck and into the cabin, but managed without incident. At one point he had even found himself wishing he had asked Matt to come along.

Dan set the glasses of sweet tea down on the table next to the couch when her question caught him off guard. His head did a little mental count. “Four. I know, it sounds unlikely, but I swear it’s true.” His alarm went off and he got her the next set of pills. “C’mon, now. Doctor’s orders. Take ‘em this way or I can have the doc write meds like for when we gotta give ‘em to the animals.”

After she took her meds, Dan sat next to her so that she could lay her head in his lap and gently rubbed her head.

Four. Four women had been entertained in his bed. While she couldn’t hold his past against him, that knowledge made it even more awkward for her to be here. It would make it impossible for her to sleep next to him in his bed. She was irritated at how petty her own thoughts sounded to herself. Becca nodded silently, her eyes remaining closed. She couldn’t look at him right now. She was ashamed at how insecure and vulnerable she felt at the moment.

When he brought her medication in to her, she took it without problems. She had endured too many injuries to feel skeptical about staying on top of her pain pills. Curling up in a ball, she closed her eyes and was quickly lost in the soothing feel of his fingers running through her hair. It took a few short minutes for her to drift into sleep.

”You slut.” Nick’s words slapped her in the face, her fear bringing a sting of tears as if he had physically slapped her. Becca was curled up on the leather couch, her knees drawn up to her chest. “I hope it was worth it, Rebecca. I hope acting like a whore was worth watching him die.” He stepped over towards the hallway and flipped on a light. Daniel was tied to a chair, his face bruised and bloody. Nick pulled out a handgun, pointing it at Dan’s chest.

“Nick, no!” Jumping up from the couch, Becca tried to stop him. The sound of the gun went off, and the red hole appeared where Dan’s heart had been pierced. Nick grabbed her, pulling her against him as his free hand reached down and held her face in place.

“Watch him die, Rebecca.” His voice was filled with malice, but she could hear the smile on his lips.

Becca whimpered and cried out in her sleep as her dreams brought to fruition one of her biggest fears. With one final jerk, she screamed, her eyes opening, but immediately filled with tears. Relief that it had been a dream, Becca ignored the pain in her body and buried her face in Dan’s chest, sobbing so hard the muscles in her stomach ached.
