MANHATTAN (CN) — A federal jury convicted Senator Bob Menendez on Tuesday on bribery and conspiracy charges that placed the New Jersey Democrat at the center of a scheme to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from Garden State businessmen who sought his political influence.

The 12-person jury deliberated for 12 hours before arriving at the guilty verdict on each of the 16 counts with which he was charged.

Federal prosecutors in New York alleged the New Jersey Democrat accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, mortgage payments and more in exchange for the senator's political clout. Three New Jersey businessmen who were also charged, along with the governments of Egypt and Qatar, were the alleged recipients.

Senator Fetterman certainly isn't the only democrat who has called for him to get the fuck outta town:

Menendez, who had been defiant for months in the face of calls from dozens of Senate Democrats to resign, appears to have finally relented after the guilty verdict and growing threats to expel him if he refused.

Among those who urged him to resign were Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; and Menendez's friend and fellow New Jersey Democratic senator, Cory Booker.

“In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer said in a statement after Menendez's latest corruption trial ended in guilty verdicts.

But our esteemed Supreme Court says bribery of public officials is okay as long as payment isn’t made until after the fact.
