Midnight Express

Meredith

She pulled away, locking up her heart and mind. "NO, Donald, you don't understand. Please, don't force me. LEave. Just go now."

She went to her restroom and locked the door behind her. "I don't want to see you right now."

Donald looked at the restroom door and sighed. He hadn't intended to drive her away. Somehow, though at the critical times in their relationship over the years, he always did. He ached to know why she kept refusing to try to make a real relationship work. He didn't really care about his job back east. He worked in advertising, so his prospects would actually be better in California. He knew he couldn't push her though, and he really didn't want to force her. He wanted her to trust him, trust him to understand and not belittle her thoughts and emotions.

He knew if he stayed too long, he would lose her forever. He picked up the stationary pad from the end table by the end, and hastily scrawled;

Dearest love,
I didn't mean to hurt you, or imply that I was forcing you. My only excuse is that we have so little time. I am sorry. When I saw you in the station, and realised we were on the same train, I thought we would have a wonderful trip together. I am sorry I have ruined that too.
I wanted to give you this 4 years ago, when we spent time together. It was specifically why I came to see you. At the time, I thought it would be in bad taste for me to ask you to marry me while you had your beau. I am leaving it with you now. Please keep it as a rememberance of me, at least.
When you are ready to see me again, if you do at all, on this trip, I will be in my cabin.

Love Always.

Donald.

He put the note on the middle of the bed, and weighed it down with the black ring box on one corner. Then he left, wiping his eyes repeatedly as he went back to his own cabin.

Meredith

Meredith came out of the bathroom as she heard the door shut. She wasn't expecting to find the note, or the ring. It was a beautiful ring. One she had longed to have, but how could she just tell him that she couldn't accept it. That to do so would cause him more pain in the long run.

She tried it on, looking at it on her hand. It seemed to go there. The diamond shining even more brightly. "I must tell him." She said, "but I can't do so face to face."

So, a pen and pad she scribbled a note.

MY dearest Donald,

If I hurt you by hiding, I am truly sorry. I love you. I have since we were in High School together, though then I didn't realize. Four years ago, when you came to me, after you left and my gram told me what you meant to do, I was heartbroken. I cried for several nights, wishing you would come back to me. But you never did.
A year and a half ago I found I had....Lymphoma. It is a form of cancer, and the doctors say I don't have much time left. That is why I cannot marry you, for to do so would cause you more pain than I wish to inflict. Could you marry a woman that could not bare you children, or would not be there for you when you are elderly and needed her?
I didn't mean to hurt you. I just could not look in your eyes and form the words. I am dying, Donald..

With all my love,
Meredith.

Steathly she walked down the cars to his, and slid the note under his door after kissing in, a silent tear fallling on it, smudging the "dearest Donald."

As steathly as she came she disappeared down the hall.

(OOC Aw, geez....you had to do that to a lymphoma survivor, didn't ya?)

Donald saw the note slip under his door. He heard Meredith trying to sneak along. He thought about opening the door, but decided not to. She must still not want to see him yet. He didn't move for many minutes, before he went to the door and bent to retrieve the note.

Silently he read it. Then he read it again. Ashen, he put the note on the table by his bed, not noticing that it fell to the floor.

He sat on his bed for a long time. He didn't know how long he sat there, but the light of morning was starting to brighten his room before he stirred.

He picked up his cell phone and made a call as he went into the hall and went to her cabin. There wa num answer to his soft knock, and listening, he couldn't hear anything in the room. She must be elsewhere.

He finally found her, in the club car, looking out the window in much the same way as he had last night. He slipped into the seat across from her, and took one of her hands in his, kissing it gently. She started to speak but he held up a hand, quieting her.

"You didn't want to inflict pain on me. Darling, do you think I could bear it, if I lost however long I could still possibly have with you? I couldn't. The thought would destroy me. We made silly decisions after high school, and we made bad choices 4 years ago. Please darling, this is our last chance. Please, lets not mess up again. We can give each other some happiness in whatever time we may have together."

His words again brought tears to her eyes. "You would want to be with me even if I were sick all the time? Look at me Donald, seriously look at me. I am a figment of the girl you once knew."

She lay her head on the table, tears comeing that needed release for many months now. "I am not the girl you fell in love with. Happy and healthy. How can you love me now?"

I stroked her hair as she cried, and then lifted her face with a gentle hand. "Darling, what I've loved about you is inside you. It always has been. Yes, you are sick, and will get sicker. That doesn't frighten me. Being with you, with the woman I love, and knowing that I brought you some comfort, and made you happy, for the next however long, that will make me very happy."

He brushes her tears away, and raises his eyebrows, "Ok?" he asked her, holding his hand out to her.

A slight smile came to Meredith's lips. Perhaps she wouldn't be alone. "Yes." She smiled, "What do we do now? The train will be stopping in about two hours."

She stood up next to him, stumbling to his arms a bit. "Sorry, I tend to be more clumsy."

"The first thing we do is get our stuff off the train. Then I need to deliver my package and collect my severance check."

She blushed. He was really willing to give up his job for her? That was more than any man was willing to do for her before.

"You are sure this is what you want?" she questioned, still in disbelief. "You know you don't have to."

"I ws sure before I came to you in the club car. I already resigned by that point. I just have to finish the delivery."

He hugged her tightly

"Do you believe me when I say how much I love you?"

Tears came to her eyes once again, this time happy tears. "Yes," She said shaking her head. "Yes, I believe you."
