Maybe you might want to consider the outside possibility that all kinds of issues cause people to change parties. I'm pretty sure my feeble memory can recall a few minor problems of the 60s that split people apart. Let's see....there was women's rights, counter-culture, free speech, economic policy, foreign policy, drugs, religious differences...just to name a few. Yet somehow your brilliant political mind is able to see through all this smokescreen and deduce the only significant issue was racism (not to mention the fact that you didn't address people who continue to vote Democratic for everything except the Presidency). You still didn't produce a single number to back up your claim that "the racists fled to the GOP," and as I said, there's no point in discussing it with you until you can.

Are there racists in the Republican party? Yes. Are there racists in the Democratic party? Yes. Are there decent people who are constantly being accused of racism because they commit the unpardonable sin of disagreeing with someone's opinions? Yes. Will things get better until we can get past this Junior High School mentality? No.

The opponents of the Civil Rights movement within the Democratic Party, flooded to the GOP. That was evident in the fact that after 1964, states the GOP never won since the Great Depression, went to them. You want numbers and I gave you whole states that switched over to the GOP right after 1964. You're missing the forest for the trees. Or maybe you're just blowing a smoke screen.

You accuse me of not bringing you numbers, but I dare you to tell me right here, right now, that the GOP did not make huge gains in the South as a direct result of the signing of the Civil Rights Act. Say it, buddy. I dare you. Man the fuck up and SAY IT. Make an idiot of yourself for anyone who studied history, to see.

And before you start pounding your head on that keyboard, do consider what Lyndon B Johnson said when he signed the Civil Rights Act. Hint: he didn't agree with you. And by the way the GOP capitalized on the opposition to the Civil Rights Act, neither did they. Black people shifted away from the GOP to the Democratic Party in the 1960s. So where does that leave you?

Oh and let's look at the Democrat and Republican House of Representatives vote record regarding the Civil Rights Act:

The Southern Democrats voted against the Civil Rights Act, 93% opposed.
The Southern Republicans voted against the Civil Rights Act, 100% opposed.
The Northern Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act, 94% supported it.
The Northern Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act, 85% supported it.

So, basically, pal, this means that 100% of all Republicans voted AGAINST the Civil Rights Act in the South - a larger percentage than Democrats.

And in the North, there were more Republicans - proportionally and numerically - who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - than Democrats.

And now for the Senate (yeas vs nays for the Civil Rights Act of 1964):
Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%)
Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%)
Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%)
Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Again, more Northern Republicans (numerically and proportionally) opposed the Civil Rights Act in the Senate, and no Southern Republican US Senator supported it. Not one. Zip. Zero. NA DA.

Soooooo now, which party was the most racist again? Hmmm?

Now, did it ever occur to you why it was that most African Americans shifted from being Republicans to Democrats during the 1960s, or even after Eleanor Roosevelt came into play a few decades earlier?

It's astounding that you would be this ignorant of the switching of souls between the Democrats and Republicans over the issue of civil rights?


So did racists move over from the Democratic Party to the GOP? Hell yes. Lyndon B Johnson knew it, and so did the African Americans, who switched away from the GOP.

Again, that leaves you in the angry ignoramus corner of this discussion.
