Lisabetta was, on the surface, an ordinary young woman of twenty-three years old. A little tall, and with a confident smile and pale face, she cut a beautiful - if slightly pallid - figure in the city of Toronto, where she studied anthropology at the University of Toronto. Her studies were - again, on the surface - involved with various hierarchical religious structures. And Lisabetta Alighieri was indeed intrigued by such studies. Yet, a little further within, there was another layer to this accomplished woman. Her quiet, patient rage. And her interest in the demonic.
There was no denying that Lisabetta was an amateur in the occult arts. Four times now, she had called the Evil Eye upon fellow students at the university, and each time there had seemingly been a response. One co-worker had suffered a substantial financial loss after she had insulted Lisabetta in front of the rest of the faculty. Another had become divorced from their wife after their affair was suddenly exposed. And Lisabetta suspected that her dark rituals were somehow, impossibly, involved. She had a certain, quiet confidence that it was her involvement that had made it come true. And in reality, that was just the case...
For demons truly did exist. And they listened. The Latin that Lisabetta spoke so elegantly could truly weave commands that demons were compelled to answer. They were invisible, and they did not show themselves to Ms. Alighieri. But they were out there. And they had a hatred for Lisabetta that thus far had remained impotent - a hatred that she could command them with her dark knowledge. And further, that her soul was intact, and her reputation undamaged by her mischief. A cost was slowly building up, unbeknownst to Lisabetta (Liza to her friends), and the demons - thus far - had had no way to extract it.
Lisabetta was pacing her room, in her lonely one-bedroom apartment, in a silent paroxysm of rage. Her face was dark - Liza did not show her emotions very often, but a woman in her life had made her mad with hatred, and Lisabetta's features were knit into the perfect picture of the woman scorned.
For the last six months, Liza had been involved with a young man called Kyle Larson. Like Liza, Kyle was a first-year Master's student, researching psychology, and they had met in undergraduate Debate Club and remained certain friends through uncertain times. While they had steadily grown closer together, Liza was nervous about losing her virginity to any man, even the trustworthy Kyle, despite his growing impatience, which in the last few months, he had started to vocalize more obviously. Kyle's insistence was, if anything, a turn-off for Lisabetta, who preferred the stoic mate over the "horny teenager" that she claimed "shows himself when you come on to me like that".
Liza's friend - EX-FRIEND - Alice, was just the opposite. Alice had met Kyle through Lisabetta, and immediately been attracted to him physically. Despite her friendship for Lisabetta, she had made romantic overtures, and before too long, bedded Kyle, who being a virgin himself, was easily seduced, not knowing up from down.
And just this afternoon, Liza had - quite innocently - found Kyle's Facebook page, to find private messages that made his involvement with Alice quite obvious...
STILL HAVE THE TASTE OF YOUR COCK IN MY MOUTH - YUMMY
CUM OVER TONIGHT?
Liza was disgusted. Enraged. Overwhelmed.
She began to lay out chalk on the floor of her room, in familiar circles. Latin words and signs marking out the elements, astrological symbols, and then symbols representing the names of various demons, adorned her floor. The room was lit only with candles, black ones that Liza had never used before. She felt a manic energy overtaking her, slowly settling into a more serious, vengeful hate - crystallizing. Her more profoundly hateful side was growing by the moment, even as she calmed. The ritual gave her some sense of peace...and yet, in her anger, she was making a few small mistakes. Ones that in a moment of grace, she would not likely have made. The sigil representing the price she was willing to pay, did not read "a reasonable price to destroy Alice's body and soul", but something to the effect of "my body and soul as reasonable price, to destroy Alice". Liza's preference for precise study over melodramatic flair usually guarded against silly mistakes like this one, but her previous successes was making her giddy with power.
It was early evening, now, and her apartment window was shut up with blinds, with only some moonlight trickling in to accompany the dark candles. She had cleared a large space in her living room, down to the hardwood. Inside a large chalk circle she sat, marks lining the floor and lacing around the circle's circumference. She was dressed in the clothes she had walked in wearing: a long black dress with a top-half that had a few almost Gothic floral embellishments, her auburn hair bound into a tight bun held up by decorated hair sticks. She had presented on campus today, and was slightly made up, with dark eyeliner and a little purplish lipstick. Liza's aquiline face was pursed and slightly pinched with annoyance, and beneath her clothes her moderate bust rose and fell as she tried to control her breathing, slowing down her racing heart.
She began to chant, kneeling amidst her Satanic signs.
