The best horror films rarely use gore. I love Hitchcock. The suspense, build up. The sense of foreboding. I don't get why some people don't get that.

The original 1963 version of The Haunting was very scary -- and without the need for gore or special effects -- just great acting, convincing sets, and a well-written storyline. I think the film was in black and white, which added to it's foreboding atmosphere. I first watched it on TV, from behind a chair, when I was young.

I picked up the book years ago. The original movie is a very faithful adaptation.
