I remember a Neil Gaiman story many years ago about a pill. It was meant to be an anticancer drug. it cured cancer...by turning you into the other sex.

And of course, people soon start to use it recreationally.

It doesn't really go into intercourse (as far as I remember) but is fascinating regarding how society might change with easy access to almost instant sex changes.

John Varley’s Steel Beach (1992) did this in a profound way that had a huge impact on me.

No spinoff. Jadzia Dax was a central character to DS9. As a Trill host, a Symbiont was implanted and the host and symbiont joined as one, sharing memories and abilities. There was no gender bending involved. It was a critical part of Trill culture.

This post has inspired me to start a new story. Looking to combine gender swapping with incest, as it's where I have a lot of success with my writing.
Normal family find themselves sharing a spaceship with a family who not only regularly screw each other, but also take X change pills, so everyone is changing genders all the time.

Of course, slowly the normal family get corrupted.

What do you think? Is this too many concepts for one story? Would the X change pills idea put incest readers off?

She has to scramble for shelter knowing that the little black dress and heels won't be suitable for Gino's bearded, hairy legged appearance.

I'll ignore the incest. It isn't too complicated, just confusing to the reader. It would suit longer format stories better, where you can follow the people changing. That allows people to know who is who.

The other family might complicate matters. They are already at the conclusion of your story. Unless you make that less visible, the journey of the protagonist characters won't have much impact. The reader could get their satisfaction from the other family.

Instead of role models, you could have an authority figure that guides, coerces or forces situations where a gender change is needed. Think of an AI or captain of the ship. The authority figure can change them and let it play out, closing some doors or feigning disasters to separate some and put others together.

They could also say that they have been thrown into an unwinnable scenario, requiring certain genders for tasks. The solution are the gender changes, giving them the feeling they are breaking the game by changing.
