Most Iconic Album Of Your Lifetime

again, an apology for not choosing one

in retrospect, the question really opens a quandrous box of possible answers

for so many big and small reasons,
various albums become iconic for incredibly personal
and otherwise subjective reasons.

certain artists have created entirely unique dialogs with specific albums.
it really comes down to taste and circumstance.

of course, there are lists out there.
some of what I have found iconic can be found there, but
i could go on with a good handful more
that...

well...

i wonder whether,

as the sense of what is actually an "album" now
has so utterly morphed into...
something only digitally tangible...

there are no real album covers to get lost in
liner notes to parse
cardboard cartons to handle, care for...
nor certainly black vinyl jewels to protect, revere and.... worship(?)
as they spin and give...

that distilled just to music,
the concept of "iconic album"
is an anachronism...?

from, sadly,
an exalbumposessor,
good (not so) simple thread exescort

I would say for me it's Madonna's "Erotica" album and Jewel's "This Way" album. Both of whom screwed around with Sean Penn. Go figure.

The Nephilim by Fields of the Nephilim

Just kidding.

It's actually somewhat difficult to say what album has had the greatest personal significance for me. Sometimes, I think I could say Treasure by Cocteau Twins, or I could say Disintegration by The Cure—or I could say Trøllabundin by Eivør Pálsdóttir. In a way, it was the first album that was 'mine', that I wasn't late to the party, that I knew her brilliance and almost no one else did.
I go for people who sing in English, generally myself.

I was meaning your Icelandic bird, but apparentally her latest release is. As for Liz, I dont think she knew half of the time.

I knew who you meant. (She's Faroese. She's actually released songs in English off and on since quite early, although the album I mentioned doesn't contain any English songs.)

Yeah I was reading up on her, born on the Faroe Islands but Icelandic, which is kinda wierd, cause you'd think she'd be Danish if anything.

Born to Run ~ Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Abbey Road ~ The Beatles
Off the Wall ~ MJ -- moreso than Thriller for me...
Tommy ~ The Who -- My name is Tommy and I became aware this year.
London Calling ~ The Clash (AG righteously mentioned it)
What's Going On ~ Marvin Gaye -- the first album the famous Motown Funk Brothers received credit for even though they had played on 100s of Motown songs and hits
Van Halen ~ Van Halen
Songs in the Key of Life ~ Stevie Wonder
Aja ~ Steely Dan -- when all my dime dancing is through I run to you.
Z - My Morning Jacket
Straight Outta Compton ~ NWA

All of these albums had the "What the fuck did I just hear?" effect on me.

That's it off the top of my head...

ELO - Out of the Blue.
AC/DC - Back in Black.
Beach Boys - Endless Summer.
Nirvana - Nevermind.
Garth Brooks - Garth Brooks.

.....and a whole bunch more.

And Iconic suggests biggest of your time, not most important to you.

"Iconic" is not a synonym for "this is my favorite album," which is what I think the thread starter was trying to ask, indirectly.

Given my age, the answer is obviously Sgt. Pepper, and I don't think there's a serious argument to be made otherwise (and if you don't agree, keep in mind that we're a few weeks away from its 50th birthday, and you're going to be sick of hearing about it). That doesn't mean it's my favorite album or even my favorite album by the Beatles, but it is famous in a way no album before or since ever was.

Now, if your lifetime is 50 years or less, there's a real argument to be made.

...or I could say Trøllabundin by Eivør Pálsdóttir. In a way, it was the first album that was 'mine', that I wasn't late to the party, that I knew her brilliance and almost no one else did.

I'm pretty sure this is still the case.

Well, the opening post was, "Which musician or album had a profound affect on your life?"

But a lot of people do seem to be caught up on the thread title, which happens.

I'm pretty sure this is still the case.

Nonsense. I've been telling people here about her for 12 years now. So there's at least a handful more people.

Surprisingly, I've even seen people here who know of her who I didn't tell.

But more seriously, she does music for the show The Last Kingdom nowadays, so that's something, or something.

Mark Steel has been raving about her for about ten years. She has an incredible voice.

She does indeed! I have on several occasions referred to her as my favourite singer not named Liz Fraser.

Under 50. Nirvana 'Nevermind'. Saved us from the big hair metal bands and synth pop music.

This is always a tough topic because so many anchor memories and feelings...not iconic (which is a different list) so much as important in my life during a time...kind of the second part of the op...

among others mentioned here...

Little Feat- Dixie Chicken

Deep Purple - Machine Head

Led Zeppelin - like the Beatles, hard to pick one that wasn't there for me

Marshall Tucker - Running like the wind

Talking Heads - Fear of Music

Roxy Music - Avalon

Neil Young - Harvest, Time Fades Away, On the Beach, others...

That's a start, anyway

well, except the beatles weren't unrepentant thieves. they cited their sources with pride.

and synth pop rules.

also, it was pretty much dead in the states by the time grunge came around.
