Movies that are better than the book

Some people might want to punch me for saying this, but
I actually thought some of the Harry Potter movies were better than the books. I loved the inventiveness of JK Rowling's wizard world, but I grew weary with certain aspects of the books, including the prose (there were times I wanted to throw the book in the fire after hearing so much about Voldemort's "high clear voice"). I thought the movies were generally well done..

Bahaha, yes. Voldemort got on my nerves too.
Edited to add: And Harry Potter was extremely annoying in the last two books. But, I guess he had a right to be...

My favorite of the books is also my favorite movie: Prisoner of Azkaban.

It was so good. Lived up to every expectation. And the cast was chosen perfectly.

I'll add Watchmen to the list. The graphic novel is among the best of its genre, but the weak ending is improved in the movie, which otherwise is very faithful to the source.
Hot take! Have you seen the HBO television series?

The Lord of the rings

I'd be curious to hear you expand on that.

I loved the books, so I can't say I thought the movies were better than the books. But I thought they were much better than I had thought it was possible for them to be. I never thought anybody would be able to do a decent job making a movie of the story, but I thought Peter Jackson did a great job.

The Lord of the rings
I’ll back you up on this, although I only read the books once, and that was when I was probably still in junior high. I remember them as being stiflingly boring, especially compared to other fantasy and sci-fi that I read around the same time. I realize they’re canon, but I can’t say I have fond memories.

The movies on the other hand, helped along by that amazing score, were fantastic!

The Lord of the rings

Controversial ;)

I'm not a great fan of either the books or the films, myself, but for me the books edge out the films because: 1) The Fellowship of the Ring has sent me to sleep on three separate occasions, 2) The Return of the King simply never seems to bloody end, and 3) even though it goes on for ever, The Return of the King still misses the whole point of the books - that for all the journeying the hobbits do to try to save Middle Earth, the evil still comes to their own homes.

No, I don't watch many shows anymore, especially now that they've careened from cable bundles that have 99% stuff I don't care about to balkanized subscription models that divide up the small amount of interesting stuff in a way that would make it even more expensive to watch those few programs on eight different platforms.

Let me introduce you to my little friend: torrent sharing.

Ha, just kidding. I would never support pirating stuff. That's illegal.

Cable is crazy expensive and now streaming is raising their prices too. It is sad that we can't really afford to watch everything and have to pick and choose.

Assuming you are from the US... or you could use a VPN...

One interesting thing is Amazon Prime offers HBO and others at a monthly rate, and you would be surprised how much you can watch in just one month. And then, cancel the subscription.

I fell asleep in the theater during the fight scenes in TTT.

The Hobbit trilogy was disappointing compared to the book.

Have you seen the animated movies?

I'm not really temperamentally suited to the 'binge and cancel' style of viewing, and rarely have huge blocks of free time to sit around watching them. I could maybe consume some of the newer style of short-season/miniseries formats that have become popular, but I can't imagine ever sitting through something like Game of Thrones, at least not quickly enough to take advantage of free or reduced price introductory subs.

Jaws

The movie was a great blend of horror and adventure with a few laughs thrown in and a great climax.

In the book Hooper was an asshole who fucked Brody's wife, but also dies whereas the cool loveable Hooper in the movie lives. The shark is killed by a piece of meat with an electric wire in it....very dull. All in all the book was dull and depressing.
Totally agree. The really slow points of the book, I was waiting for "Landshark" to knock on my door just for something to happen!!! (ref. Saturday Night Live) 😃

The Hobbit films are offensively bad, but I think that's in part because they are a poor choice for a big budget adaptation.

I did see the late 70s animated film, which wasn't awful. There are some hilarious other adaptations out there, and there's a youtube channel by a creator called Jess of the Shire which reviews the different Tolkein adaptations, often with an expression of open-mouthed shock.

The Hunt for Red October.

The ā€œwho-knowsā€ element to the film is fantastic, whereas the book is more like ā€œYeehaw! Let’s get ourselves a free nuclear submarineā€.

It was that bad I couldn’t finish it.

Who is it?

Fhjhukjkpllmm.

What?

Flowers.

To this day when I give an answer I don’t know I start supremely confident and then mumble like this.

I have have never heard anyone who read the book have anything really positive to say about it. But it sold well and somehow got made into a movie, and I wonder if the movie is what really condemned it.

Here's one people will be shocked to hear me say

50 Shades of Gray(first movie)

Better than the book because the director decided to portray Gray not as some romanticized bad boy but an absolute creep which is what he truly was. He was kicked out of the franchise and movies 2/3(direct to net/DVD) went out of their way to try to change that, but both movies were bombs(first one too) and even the book sales took a dive not a spike. Second trilogy came and went with no fan fare (although it sold pretty well to core fans, but no buzz at all)

I'm very thankful someone had the integrity to expose it for what it was.

I think I watched all three movies... The first one was ok. He was a groomer though. Which turned me off.

You are right, the books were trash. Or, the first one was at least, because I couldn't finish it. Edited to say: My inner goddess... Nope.

Where I live, (biblebelt: crotch level) the women were living for the books. And the movies were always sold out the first two weekends.

Sometimes, people want the fantasy regardless of how realistic it is

After I heard that it was written from Twilight fanfiction, I couldn't take it seriously.

I read several chapters from each book, enough to be able to say that from experience it was hot garbage and full of misinformation about the BDSM lifestyle.

never bothered with the second trilogy, but it was literally the same story done from his POV...the same damn story...that gets you a book deal apparently, or maybe it was all she could come up with to fulfill a deal.

Unless there was a cat that witnessed everything, we should be done with it.

I want the cat's perspective now. You know that cat would tell it like it is.

Edited to add: Stephanie Myers did an Edward perspective. I have no clue how well it did, but maybe EL was trying to get some of that extra coin like her. 🤣
