"Yeah. And Mark sounded stressed but didn't elaborate, so the delay can't be good," Chase said grimly. His eyes brooded for a moment before refocusing on the group. "How would 3 truths and a lie work? Ben, Beth and I have known each other for years, and we're involved with at least one person. So it's going to be kind of tough to fool anyone here."
Laura shrugged. "So spouses go last, and we'll keep it as something since you guys graduated. That should cover at least a couple years between everyone getting together." She looked around the room and noticed general agreement. "So I'll go first and Chase can guess, then Christie, then Beth, then Adam, and finally Ben. And then rotate, except the significant other is the last to guess. Bonus points if you even stump your partner."
Laura thought for several moments. "Ok. I owned a BMW bike before Ben and I met. I stayed an extra year in college to earn a minor in mathmatics. My dream is to live on a working farm. And I actually like anchovies."
Chase and Christie both guessed the anchovies, Beth the farm, Adam the bike. And Ben sat contemplating for quite a while before shaking his head.
"The anchovies is too bizarre to not be true," he said. "The farm wouldn't be too far off base for you. So it's got to be the bike or the math. You were a wild child, so the bike is a possibility. You're great with math, so that's a possibility too." He shook his head for a second. "I'm guessing the math minor."
Laura looked chagrined. "Yeah...Ben got it. Technically. I didn't stay an extra year for it, but I did get a math minor. The 5th year was because I couldn't fit in one of the core courses for my major and had to fill in with other stuff." She looked at Chase expectantly, who also took his time thinking while everyone else expressed their disbelief about Laura liking anchovies.
"I've always wanted an old Jeep. Like from the old TV show 'MacGuyver'. I earned my jump instructor rating for parachuting. I only go deer hunting because of the guys I go to camp with. And my wife doesn't have a clue how much I make per year." He shot a sly glance at Christie, who kept a straight face for a minute before wringling her nose and sticking her tongue out at him.
Ben laughed. "Well, obviously that one's true, so I'm going with the jump instructor. You're too much of a stick-in-the-mud to do anything like that!"
Beth guessed the deer hunting, while Adam guessed the Jeep. Laura looked back and forth between the couple and agreed with Ben about the income. Christie smiled softly and said, "The Jeep. You once said you wanted one of the old style Chevy Blazers but that a Jeep was too overrated."
Chase looked crestfallen. "Just how in the hell could you remember something like that?!?" he asked incredulously. Christie just laughed and glanced at Ben.
Ben answered promptly. "My wife was a stripper." Laura immediately flung a pillow at him, making him laugh. "I went surfing in Australia and met Liam Hemsworth. Jessica Alba signed my abs. And Adam was my rock climbing instructor my first time not doing indoor climbing."
Christie's eyes shot to Adam, who looked surprised. "Something tells me the rock climbing one." Beth guessed that as well. Adam shook his head, saying it was possible but he'd never be able to say for sure. He guessed Jessica Alba. Chase guessed Laura being a stripper, and Laura, resignedly, guessed the Australian surfing.
Ben had a cat-with-the-canary grin and turned his phone to show pictures of him with Liam Hemsworth and a pair of surfboards, as well as a picture of Jessica Alba signing his midriff. "Beth and Christie are right. It didn't click until a little bit ago, but Christie was actually my instructor for rock climbing."
Christie blushed, laughed, and shook her head. "That was actually going to be one of mine, that I taught climbing and bouldering. Now I've got to think of something else."
"I tried and was rejected from the Air Force. I own an Indian motorcycle. My picture is in the men's room in a few bars. And I've been published in my field."
Ben guessed the men's room, as did Adam. Beth guessed the motorcycle, and Laura the Air Force. Chase sat quietly. "Being published. You were rejected from the Army, so the Air Force was a possibility. You're a showoff when in a crowd you're comfortable with, so the bar is likely. And you've talked about riding bikes, so I'm assuming the motorcycle is just in storage or something. But I've never even heard you talk about writing, and being published is a big deal. So being oublished it is."
Christie clapped her hands and laughed. "Nope, it's the motorcycle. It's not an Indian, just a Yamaha. But I dream of owning one! But you were right Chase-it's in my brother's barn until we finish getting settled. And the driveway improved."
Everyone's eyes turned to Beth.
