Here's my moving to do list. I have one month.

Pack things I'm keeping
Donate furniture and the rest
Find storage space
Cancel cable
Cancel gym
Cancel water
Change address at post office, magazines, bills

So, what am I forgetting? I don't want to forget anything this time.

Don't forget to cancel you electrics and Telephone and transfer your internet to your new address. At the other end you then start them up again. That way you don't get stuck for someone elses electric and telephone bills.

Another thing. Pack everything long before the move. Have everything in cardboard boxes and sealed. And don't forget to mark the outside of the boxes with the contents (Kitchen Utensils, Blankets, etc.).

If you have plants from your yard you want to take, make sure you dig them and put them in pots at least 2 weeks before you move. They'll be more likely to survive.

Take some pictures of the old place before you leave. 20 years from now you will look at them an chuckle.

Don't get me started - I'm in the middle of moving right now!

Where you're moving will have an impact.

Overseas - visas, innoculations, stock up on any perscription meds or contact lenses that might be tricky to get, close bank account.

In general remember notice periods (my internet provider required 30 days) and return of any equipment for internet or TV. If you're renting, your lease agreement might give you details of anything particular that needs to be attended to as part of your move out. Get packing materials...although if you'll be handling it all yourself (not getting removalists in), I have been told that wrapping things like crockery and glasswear in towels linen and clean clothes a) cuts down on packing space and b) saves having to rewash things like you do with newspaper. Also, depending on where you're moving, you might be able to get your gas and electricity just switched to your new place. If moving out of state, find out the requirements for changing your driver's license and car registration. Some states (like CA) officially only give you 10 days to take the written test do all the paperwork and get emissions tested...getting an early start on reading up for the test, and knowing what documents and other things are required can help make it easier when you get there.

Hope it helps...I think I need a drink now!

find dealer
have one last joint with current dealer

clean the place
eat
sleep
steal the copper wire from the building

only things I can think of
some may not apply :D

reserve a truck

If you're getting proffessional movers, here are some tips:

Buy them coffee, give them water, they'll apriciate it and so will your furniture
Treat them with respect, they have a hard enough job as it is.
They are (generally) profesionals, they know how to do their job, trying to instruct them will not help your stuff get to it's destination safely.

If you're getting friends to help you move here are some tips:

Lift sofas, chairs etc so that the front is facing down (take the cusions off first,) You'll find you can go through doors much easier this way.
Don't open the beer until you're at the destination and 3/4 of the truck is empty.
