Heading uptown, I decide to stop by and see the Abacus. His is one of only two banks in town and I've been putting away whatever I don't need with him since he opened for business.
I dig the old, dog eared piece of paper out of my wallet that has my account number written on it. Walking up to one of the windows, I ask the teller how much I have.
She disappears into the back office for a moment and comes back. The amount she has written on the piece of paper sure seems to have a lot of zeros in it. It's been so long since I've actually dealt in cash, I'm not sure, but seems to me to be quite a bit.
I ask if Abacus is around. He must have heard me, for he walks in, a bandy rooster type of guy with thinning hair and a big dome of a head.
We chat for a few minutes and I tell him about Violet, that I want her to be able to draw on my account as she needs. He nods and says he knows her, says it will be fine. I sign a form to make it all official and wave to him as I leave, having promised him an invitation to the wedding.
I don't know a lot about weddings, and I hope Violet will be able to guide me in whatever it is I'm supposed to do. I do know I will need a best man. I know, at least casually, quite a few people but figure maybe I ought to talk to Violet before going to far with my own ideas of a guest list.
Strikes me about then that maybe Vincent might make a good best man. I close my eyes and sniff, trying to see if I can find him.
