Nothing to act on at the moment, but I know that when small animals go they tend to go fast.
If her conditions turns miserable and past the point of no return, I need to do something as those she is living with will likely stall till she's past agony.
Hi YC, I’m zonked so just a quickie.
First, do not assume this is arthritis, or anything else. It may be but you NEED to have the cat checked by a vet. Here are a few options for that:
1. Go visit one of the local vet offices, in person is best but a phone call will also work. Try to do this during non-peak hours if at all possible. Explain the situation to the front desk staff. No one who works at a vet clinic enjoys knowing an animal is suffering, (although they hate people who bitch about the fees or stick them with a bill). Ask, nicely, if there is any way you can work out a payment plan to cover the cost of the vet fees. Also, if you explain that finances are tight, they will make sure to keep all charges to an absolute minimum. Tell them you understand if it’s not possible, don’t be pushy or whiny, but you are concerned because the cat is in pain.
2.Try your local SPCA. They will often offer vet services at a significant discount. This may mean you don’t get to schedule an appointment and may have to sit and wait for hours but that’s the trade off.
3. If the vet can’t help and the local SPCA is not an option, call around to some vets and ask if they know of any “discount” vets or charitable organizations you can deal with.
I will be working with vets all week. If you can give me as much info as possible about the cat and the symptoms, I can ask for their advice. (How old is the cat? Spayed/neutered? Health history? Diet? What are exact symptoms? How long have you noticed them? Any changes in eating/drinking? Any changes in urination/bowel movements? Etc, etc)
Do not ever give any animal human medication unless directed by a vet.
Animals are tougher than they look. I’m fine with euthanasia when it’s needed but don’t jump the gun.
I’m exhausted but let me hop up on the soapbox to remind everyone that there is no such thing as a “free” kitten or puppy. You need to budget for veterinary care, including annual vaccines, especially after the age of seven.
Down off the soapbox…whew. Very tired. Must eat.
