My vote for the worse real company name of all time - BJ Services

Apparently when the UK polytechnics were all becoming universities in the 90s, Newcastle Poly very nearly became the Central University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, until the acronym was pointed out.

Cambridge University has to be careful when naming things, for the same reason.

The Australian National University also suffers from acronym peril. Their Choral Society reversed the acronym to go by "SCUNA" (pronounced the same way as a popular beer serving) which seems like a sensible choice.

There are legends that we narrowly missed getting a Southern Highlands Institute of Technology, but I don't know how true they are.

"The acronym CREEP is short for The Committee for the Re-election of the President, which in 1972 was the fundraising organization of then-president Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign.

"The committee officially launched in 1971 and was originally abbreviated CRP. After the Watergate scandal, it retroactively became known as CREEP. Formed ostensibly to “do whatever it takes” to get Nixon to a second term, members of CREEP would ultimately get caught up in the Watergate scandal, sending some of them prison and all of them to infamy."
