I spent an hour or so looking at all sorts of photos in New Orleans cemetaries, and no luck. I even looked up a walkthrough of the game, and it mentioned clicking on the "angel icon" to go to St. Louis Cemetary (of which there are several, it turns out) and visit the grave of Marie Laveaux, a voodoo priestess who is said to haunt the cemetary. Her tomb is a popular tourist destination, but it doesn't have the angel on it.

Given the walkthrough, I'd be shocked if it weren't an image from New Orleans cemetary statuary. It's beautiful, but I suspect it's an anonymous work, unless it's taken from some Old World sculpture.

Yes, sort of Art Nouveau, like that guy who painted the lurid-colored nymphs lying naked around the swimming pools. Not Erte' - that's too stylized and Art Deco. But the pose has that heightened naturalism.

I guess there are two choices now: Give up (which normally isn't a part of my vocabulary) or start e-mailing other GK-philes and asking them about the angel. The latter is very odd for me since I haven't spoken with anyone from that circle in 5 years now, and I definitely had my reasons for quitting that sphere.

But that angel is really pissing me off now, like an unsolved jigsaw puzzle that I must piece together. I've got to know where it's located, at least, if not an actual name.

You could ask Sierra Studios.

They might have used a stock image from a photographers' agency.

It looks similar to angels that can be seen in many Victorian graveyards in the UK so it could have been a mass-produced statue.

I should have mentioned that - I looked at several stock-photo websites in my search. Heh, I didn't think to keep track of which ones. Also, I don't know how much access they allow to non-subs - as I recall, the sites I saw were sort of 'teasers'.

I found one site where they had a whole database of people entombed in one cemetry or another, but it looked like a really crapshoot-sort of way to look for things. Most of what they had were inscriptions, not pictures of statuary, and they didn't indicate what information they had. Unless you had the name of a deceased person, it was kind of a black hole.

*scoff* I've seen the local library and cruised the bookstores (not on this subject but in general), and the pickings are slim. If it's not Greek related, it's not carried for the most part. Besides the obvious exceptions of high-rolling bestsellers by Stephen King, Dan Brown, J.K. Rowling and Helen Fielding, bookstores are dismal as hell when it comes to foreign works and subjects. That's why I order all my books from Amazon US.

I contacted an old writing friend of mine (from back when I was writing just fan fiction) by the name of Robert Hazelton, and I told him about the situation. Coincidentally, he and his band (now former) used the angel image for their CD cover a few years ago, and he gave me a direct link to it!
