Naoko's news, views and shoes thread

Oooh curl, I was writing while you were posting. Perhaps this one should be for you.

Hi, Naoko.

Hmm. I'm not sure what to say about your tagging that photo for me. And I can't figure out the exact scale. Are you trying to say something positive by suggesting I have really big... potatoes, or something negative by suggesting I have a really small... carrot. Don't tell me I need to send you another picture to refresh your memory!

I think I'll take it as a compliment -- that any time you see anything shaped like those, no matter what the scale, you think of scrubbing me! :rose:

At least you didn't drink it. ;)
"I've got four on the floor
And a fifth under the seat"

Actually, is was usually a couple gallons. And it was Grandma, not me. Gram and Gramps lived near Detroit during USA Prohibition and often drove their Model T across the river to Windsor, Ontario and back. With gallon jugs under the seat, hidden by Gram's long dress. And USA Customs didn't look under ladies' dresses. Much.

:D Hypoxia! A delicious little tale.

Nearly as delicious as curl's ... carrots ;)

Dahlinks, I am in and out ... of this thread! of this thread. I was hoping to start catching up with posting a bit today, as Piglet went back to school after being off half of last week. I dropped her off in the car this morning, and then at lunchtime I had the dreaded phone call and had to go and fetch her - she went in quite bonny and a nice colour in her cheeks but by the time I fetched her, she was all whey-faced and weepy. I took her to the doc (I mean the real doctor - not like me who can only tell you your body is gorgeous), and we agreed she might be able to go back to school ... on Thursday.

:)eek::catroar::eek:)

You are welcome, HP! :)

Well, it has been a time. I have snuck on here early while Piglet sleeps in. She has had some sore-throat-y virus and been off school for DAYSSSSSS!!!! Tonight she was supposed to be scraping her violin at a county youth orchestra festivity, but we will have to give that a skip as I really do want her to get better. (Poor thing, she had to miss her drama club show and her horse riding show at the weekend :( ) Anyway, the Fella is going to come round and sit with her for a couple of hours, then I can get out and ... go to a School Governors' meeting! Yayyyy! I know, I just live for pleasure

I have been quite poorly myself and really I wanted to go to have this Hopi ear candle thing and lymphatic massage. My ears are really blocked up and sore. But no chance. And I had planned to go for a fun massage and afternoon tea with the mate I went to the rugby with. In a moment of inspired faith in the Japan team I bet him this treat. I can't really afford it but it will be a lot of fun. :) When I can get away and do it.

That work fiasco was such a total disaster. You would not believe the amount of extra work we teaching staff had to put in. In fact it was so bad, that the university council voted to pay us all £200 extra as a goodwill gesture.
:nana:
We were all gobsmacked. Although some were a bit bewildered, and said their goodwill was worth more than that, and it had to be explained to them that the 'goodwill' was on the part of the university. We are so unused to them even realising we exist that we don't know quite what to do when they show goodwill towards us.

As an example, they recently decided to overhaul the new online tutorial system which had partly led to the fiasco, so they had to take it down for two days. So they took it down over the weekend. I posted a message on the university online noticeboard to say: "But did you not realise that Saturday is the day when we do most of our teaching, and most need this timetable?" It was quite a popular message. It took ten days for someone to come back and say: "Yes yes, of course we realised that, silly girl. We thought about it VERY CAREFULLY! and can assure you that Saturday is the best day to do it. Cross our hearts. *Whisper* Never do that again, for Chrissake."

Well, there is more, which I will report back on shortly. I know how Ogg and HP love these little stories which make them realise how nice it is to be retired!
:D

Yes, Naoko, I do enjoy your little stories of (mis-) management. Occasionally, I get a whiff of it through my "work" with my local cadets. It's full of 'wonderful new initiatives' and new software, none of which works in practice for a year or two, and then it's time for a new set.

I don't see that famous picture of the tennis player as "tacky".
a] it's a damned well-taken picture (it takes skill to get that right first time),
b] she has nice legs
c] it's not 'rude' (although Aunt Millicent might blanch a trifle)

Have fun
:rose:

Lets see. News about the sick piglet, a School Governors' meeting, your health. Sandwiched in a mention of a date with a massage and a lost bet. Finish off with a report on the work fiasco.

Distract everyone with a wonderful picture. :(

Well, it worked. You know me and pictures. i have to find the story that goes with it. At first I thought maybe her doubles partner had made an errant back swing. But on the other hand, it could have been a quick return while she had her back turned.

But there is the matter of all the balls laying around. It must be practice and the guy on the ball machine got in a lucky shot. Butt, since she is not wearing panties, she was obviously trying to distract the ball guy in the first place and his gun went off accidentally as she was trying to return a low right lob that was just out of reach.

See there are plot bunnies everywhere.

1. Get well soon. We need a fully fit and functioning Naoko.

:rose::rose::rose: x 4

2. Your stories remind me of how bad management could be. In the past few days there has been an article and discussions in The Times about how incompetent (originally about Senior Police) British public sector managers can be, promoted beyond their abilities and promoted to get them away from a mess of their own creation. However, I may be retired but I am still dealing with incompetent public sector managers in my community roles.

The latest mess is over local festivals. They were run by community volunteers but the council decided they had to be put out to tender and the community volunteers didn't have the organisation nor the finances to be allowed to tender.

So they awarded the contracts to professional event companies that expect to make a profit from running the festivals. The volunteers still did most of the work but the company 'managed' them. The festivals became shorter in time but still cost the council the same. The companies decided that sponsorship was they way forward. The only sponsors that came forward were alcohol-based so there were complaints from the public about drunken obnoxiousness. With subsidised beer and heavily discounted alcopops, what did the managers expect?

Now the council is proposing that the festivals be run by the community volunteers again for 2017. But the volunteers still don't have an acceptable organisational structure nor the finances despite having started and run these festivals in their current form since 1993 and in earlier forms since 1889.

The solution? The council will advise the volunteers on how to set up a Community Trust. The prospective trustees would be expected to guarantee the finances. Since the volunteers don't have people willing to risk their houses, their mortgages and their pension funds against a failure BY THE COUNCIL to provide funds - it isn't going to happen.

Handing the festivals back to the volunteers without preconditions? The council can't do that. The politicians and senior council officers wouldn't get any credit for the success. They never get blame for failures - that's assigned to the volunteers.

In the distant past I and my family ran one festival on our own with help from a few family friends. It was taken over by a larger community group in 1993 and ran for ten years without council interference - until the councillors decided that they should be charging us for use of public open space...

No no no, the tennis player's bottom is "art". I should know, I had a poster size repro of this picture on my college room wall, when I was at uni. On the other wall was Gustav Klimt's "Judith", so hey, a natural pairing of the seductive power of women.... surely?!

I had to look that one up. Very interesting. I had seen his "Judith II" but not the first one.

I think (hope) that it's a silicone model of his face.
. . . .<thoughts of Hannibal Lechter just arose. . . .>

Hullo glynndah! :)

Hullo, electricblue :rose: I kinda thought a few people in here would have had (ho ho) the tennis player ... on their wall back in the day ;)

I am still rushing, as Piglet is still on my hands. She is totally bunged up and very sad. I tell her it's just the 'flu, but acksherly she has a couple of mean friends who have been causing her unhappiness  She has a lot of really great friends too, I see this as an opportunity for her to learn that some people just are stupid and mean, and not worth bothering with.

The other day was INSET day (when the teachers have 'training' and make us take our kids back, really so we can see how ghastly the little blighters are and appreciate that teachers take them off our hands). I got all geared up to sacrifice the day to taking Piglet and a couple of little piglets out. Remember when we went to the Egyptology museum in Halloween week? ("Mummy in the Museum" :D) And we used to go down to the tacky beach and I would let them play crazy golf, then make motorboats out of sand on the beach.

Well, Piglet said: "Oh no, it's OK, mum. I am going on the bus on my own into town with a group of friends to watch Fantastic Beasts."

So I got to do my work all day instead of being with Piglet and her pals, going to the cinema and out for pizza and stuff. Yayyy.

The Fella and I had both looked forward to going to Fantastic Beasts with Piggles; she is usually willing to go twice so we can each get to see a good film. I said to him that we had better just go and watch it on our own without her! :D (He was quite enthusiastic, but as you'll remember, he is not the kind of fun-loving guy who sneaks off work for an afternoon - hence why I left him - so we couldn't really go.)

Advent Calendar Day 7

Here is one for my managers, and a story for Ogg and HP about their latest shenanigans.

I don't know if I even managed to let you all know? but about a year ago, I was interviewed for a totally cool postgraduate module - bang in my subject area of research. I was made 'appointable', but they didn't have enough students to give me a group, so I just tucked it in my knicker-leg to look at on rainy days and remind myself that I am totally cool. Then suddenly last September, the managers of this module rang up and said they had had a sudden rush of students to the head, and could I please come and teach for them.

I was totally excited! even though I only had two weeks to prepare for a large group of postgraduate students on a module I had never read a thing about before  (I realised subsequently that the group was well over capacity, they packed it out in the expectation that a lot of them would drop out. But of course I have high retention rates because I nurture my little darlings lovingly, so hardly any of my students did drop out.)

I have really loved teaching this module, BTW, even though I had to try and take it on, brand new, all through that total fiasco about the online timetables.

A couple of weeks ago, the Module Chair emailed us in a panic to say that a colleague who had two tutor groups of students had suddenly gone off sick. Would we be willing to take extra students into our group? Would we be willing to take on an extra tutor group? A couple of my colleagues replied saying they would be willing to take a few extra students, but that they were quite over-loaded already. I was kinda surprised because an extra tutor group is a whole extra contract, with the total salary and I thought there might be other benefits too. (If you lose a teaching contract, they make you safe for all the other ones you have.) I enthusiastically wrote in and said I would take both tutor groups! The Line Manager was on leave for one day, so I presumed it would all get decided when she came back on the Monday.

Then the next morning, I had eight extra students in my group. The Module Chair had panicked and leapt in to do the Line Manager's job. She had just decided to spread the students out amongst the four tutors who got back to her that day to say we might be willing to take any extra students. She left out the one who didn't see the email and only got back to her the next day.

So I had to work all over the weekend, contacting the new students, and contacting my existing set of students to reassure them all. I had to try to think about how to make the group work again. There were contradictory messages about how to run things in the Module Chair's emails, blahblahblah.

Meanwhile, one of my colleagues had written to the Module Chair to say: "What are the financial implications?" ie do we get paid for all this extra work, and she wrote back to say: "That's not my responsibility, I'm afraid."

You couldn't make it up, could you!

I had to go all over the university website, consult with the union, consult with my colleagues in order to find out that I already had a teaching group that was over capacity, so I definitely absolutely should get something extra for taking even more students under my capacious wing.

I heard from the Line Manager last Wednesday (having already had to teach these students for five days). We will get something. However because the panic-stricken Module Chair has done things this way, instead of waiting a couple of days and then giving the two whole tutor groups to two of us who were willing (which would have been far less disruptive for the students), and the six week window in which under due process you are allowed to do this to us tutors has passed, they are having to figure out some special way to pay us and she will get back to us on it.

Yes, ten days later I am still waiting to hear. Meanwhile I have been supporting those eight students and had to mark one assignment and was supposed to attend an online meeting but luckily the managers are so crap that the one who emailed us about the meeting has got a dodgy email address and all her emails to all of us go into our Junk boxes.

I really must insist that you write these things down in the form of a story for Lit (yes, there is a category for humour & satire).
And I really must have a word with my local library about those new books.

Some of them are already turning up in my charity book shop - bought as presents for people that didn't appreciate the humour.
