I find it difficult to believe weights that small could weigh 3# though. I think it must be a different unit of measure. Probably some kind of fishing weight?
They’re lead, and were painted gold for that picture.

To be 3 pounds, they’d have to be 16 times the density of lead. The densest element on earth is osmium, which is only twice the density of lead (22.6 g/cc, vs 11.3 g/cc). You’d be talking about collapsed matter to get that much weight in that small volume.
