Need help formatting paragraph spacing

I sometimes put a double line spacer between paragraphs in my work to show a time separation and occasionally for aesthetic purposes. When I submitted the text (.rtf) all of the double spacing had become single spaces. Is there a way to keep the double spacing where I want it?
