I really want to get a broadband connection for my pc. I'm currently on a dial-up connection and am a bit fed up with it. I need some help:

1) Do I need a new modem to get connected?

2) What problems has anyone experienced with service/provider etc? I'm based in London, UK and was wondering what UK provider is really reliable.

Thanks for your help everyone

About 1. I don't know how it is in the UK, but here in Denmark the provider provides the equipment you need to get connected, and all you need is a network card in your computer.

I don't know about no. 2, since I'm not located in the UK, but I'm sure there are many here who'll help you out with that.

Hi Vampiredust,

I'm down the road in Kent so i hope I can cast some light on your problem

Just pick out a provider, they can supply the filter and modem as part of your broadband package. I'm with BT theyre a bit expensive but I was with them on dial up and could keep my old Email etc.

As mentioned above as long as you have a network card or a network port on your motherboard there should be no problem. If your computer is reasonably new it probably will have such a port near the USB and other ports are. It's square and similar to the socket where your modem cable fits.

Hope this helps

I think this link Common Broadband Questions will answer your question about who provides what.

As far as who is the best provider, Well you will have to research that.....depending on who's cable your going to use how many people in the area are on that cable and how many are on a particular NODE......and how fast the fiber is running at feeding that NODE. But here is a list of Broadband providers in the UK....when you sign up ask what's the expected speed they will provide you and what is there minimum....before you can start complaining about slow connections.

I hope that helps
