New Adventure, New Thread (M)

We took a trip out to Indiana Dunes which was a state park when I was a boy but has since become a National one.

It was nice to be out in the sun, the see the lake and watch the waves, slurry and slushy with half melted snow, as it beat against the shore.

It was nice to be around people, especially young female people who were willing to be outdoorsy despite the cold in their tight black leggings.

Sounds and looks like a fun adventure. I hope the trip was accompanied by lots of smiles :)

I keep sending photos of some of the ridiculous things that I find while I am up here to friends, as my means of letting them know just what I am experiencing, and to let them know that I am doing okay.

Some of the things I find are long lost treasures of childhood, some are just astounding in how banal and ancient they are.

Then I find things that remind me of how cyclical life is, and I am torn between being just as ridiculous as my parents and keeping them or tossing them out on the principle of downsizing.

No one but the Cranky Old Man Fan Club gets to see photos like these though.

Sign me up for the COM Fan Club... that is a hot pic.

I’m very glad to hear you took time to enjoy some beautiful sites after your busy week.

Hope your shoulder is healing.

I had a smile on my face when I got to see the lake and race up a sand dune.

At least once or twice the young girls smiled when I ogled them, which is better than the alternative of them reporting me to the guides.

😜

I will be sure to put your membership card in the mail tomorrow!

Am hoping that the drugs and ice is helping with my shoulder. I need to get back to exercising.

Archer's Salute

From Wikipedia:
A commonly repeated legend claims that the two-fingered salute or V sign derives from a gesture made by longbowmen fighting in the English archers at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War, but no written historical primary sources support this contention. Medieval illustrations and tapestries, however, depict English archers giving the sign, as do tapestries hanging in Angers Castle, home of the Angevin (Plantagenet) dynasty. This origin legend states that English archers believed that those who were captured by the French had their index and middle fingers cut off so that they could no longer operate their longbows, and that the V sign was used by uncaptured and victorious archers in a display of defiance against the French.

I'm still here, I still have mine

Have the French started an assault on you, my darling old god?
Tsk, tsk. Send them packing with an arrow to the shoulder and boot in their arse. Things have been hard, but you're still standing and that's a win.

My darling rose,

Do not take the bit about the French literally

It is what folks in academia call 'a metaphor.'
😜

I feel a little bit like I have been through a battle or two.

Thank you for your kindness and support, as always.

National Pound Cake Day

Happy high holy day of baking!

As I have stated before, pound cake reminds me of my grandfather, who would often stop at an old European Bakery when he came to visit and he often brought chocolate marble pound cake.

Tonight, because it is 'National Pound Cake Day' I decided to attempt making such a cake, my first baking effort since my mother passed.

There must be a step I miss because my cake lacks the luxurious, hey black hue that those crafted by Ms. Stewart possess. I also seem to have not gotten my swirl down far enough.

Even so, even this failure is edible.

Enjoy

It is almost guaranteed that if I find one item at my father's house that I will find another, like some perverse quantum entanglement of hoarding.

The uncertainty comes to play when it concerns whether the item is so 'new' that is has never been used or opened or whether it is so used and worn as to be completely useless for its original task.

Such are the odd, tiring physics of trying to help my father declutter.

stumbled across your thread this evening. Has been a very interesting read. Love your pictures and the ongoing tale of life. refreshing :rose:s

Thank you for looking and thank you even more for leaving a comment!

This thread has been a bit more melancholy and angry than I first intended, but I suppose it is an honest reflection of the journey thus far.

Very sweet.

High praise from such an esteemed Lit celebrity!

Thank you very much!

Hope that I can keep you entertained

Crossings

My father and I seem to have bad luck with deer.

One year after college, a deer hit my car (if the dent is on the side of the car then the deer hit you) and my father hit a deer with his van a while back. His collision is one reason the doctors want to check out his kidneys.

But a few weeks ago, our luck improved.

We were retuning home from the bank and I took a scenic route that led us from the park my ma enjoyed to a back road with fields and bluffs on one side and birch forest on the other.

I was driving slowly, just enjoying the scenery, when a deer ran from across the field to the forest. Another joined, then another behind the car.

I stopped, happy and eager to be so close to such graceful creatures, thankful for the respite and the chance to be just a little closer to some life in the cold Wisconsin wilderness.

remembrance

I'm sure you don't remember me, but I remember you! It's been years since I was on this site, years since I saw and talked with you last. I thought of you a few months ago when I was in your hometown, and I found myself walking along the river.

I have changed, so much. I wonder if you have?

I am still the angry bastard that my folks raised me to be.

I have a dog now though.

She makes me happy, she mostly keeps me sane
I think that I remember you.

Welcome back! I hope that your return is a happy and positive development.

Dogs are good. I lost mine about a year ago. He was 14. I am starting to think I might someday be ready for another dog, but, maybe not just yet.

I'm glad you have a dog!

I am sorry for your loss
🌹

My little girl is 14 now (we got her as a rescue at 8) and I am thankful for every day with her.

She helps me deal with my perfectionist tendencies;
A dog that is not the most obedient, well trained is still a better smuggler than no dog at all.

I would highly recommend that you rescue a dog from your local shelter when you are ready.

Today had a ridiculously early start due
to an inspection, but all in all it went well and I got home relatively early.

The sun felt warm on my face as I flirted with my newly returned work crush, our vessel and crew passed inspection with the US Coast Guard, and I got some shopping and personal things done.

Often, when I finish 'body grooming' and I gaze down at the brown and silver hair piled at my feet, I think of the time I shaved my head and then recited poetry to girl who asked if I was an artist. I used my shorn locks to illustrate the poem and I watched the girl's eyes widen with awe and intrigue. I proved too 'artistic' for her friends who whisked her away from the party after that.

Not read all your thread but I just had to say I had images of sex dwarfs before I realised I'd misunderstood your original post. Made me chuckle at least :D

I hope that you enjoy the rest of the thread.

Maybe just look at the dirty photos and don't bother with all the words.

I reckon that there are too many of them anyway
😜

Thanks for keeping our spirits up with your fine, sexy pictures.

I had no idea that my posts rose to the level of something so worthwhile as a public service like that!

However, as a wiser man than I said, 'if the girls don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.'

I am doing my best to keep myself busy

[I feel like I should make a salacious pun about you ladies helping me rise....]

I think I saw a few goosebumps in that last photo.😏 Looking good as usual. Love the bracelet by the way

I might have pruned myself a bit too early, having been lulled in to a false sense of spring from a warm sunny day or two.

Thank you! I am very glad that I took the bracelet and have been putting it to good use.

Ancient ships and new tools

There is a philosophical 'thought experiment's known as the "Ship of Theseus" which is based on a real occurrence and concerns renovations and reconstructions. It holds significance for me as as a would be philosopher and a mariner. Author Terry Pratchett had a novel retelling of it as "My Grandfather's Axe."

Last time I was up in Wisconsin, I debated bringing back an old rusty axe that I found in the garage and trying to bring it back to life.

Had it been a fire axe or a Pulaski I would not have hesitated.

Now that I find myself furloughed from work and proscribed from visiting my father I am beginning to lament my decision to leave it where I found it.

All this potential upheaval and social anxiety has me concerned, and an anxious man reaches out for a tool,.or a weapon.

So I do not have my grandfather's axe, but I have my own hatchet.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit

This is one of the most subdued Saint Patrick's Days in a very long time.

It is usually the official start of our season, but instead of a green River and a busy weekend, operations are shut down and we are not working.

Having been to Eire so recently all the ridiculous young drunks and garish green frippery seem a bit exploitative.

There is definitely a pall over all the festivities these days.

Even so, I reckon that the cranky old man fan club deserves a holiday related pic.
