A New Jersey high school student faces multiple charges Monday after building and detonating several pipe bombs at a popular park in Rockland County over the weekend.

The alleged bomb-maker is 16-year-old Robert Estevez of Union City, who is described by his family as someone who is intensely curious about how things work.

"He's always been curious how to make stuff like that. He tried doing that stuff for excitement, just to have fun," his brother, Javier Estevez, told CBS 2.

Police say the teen had made a six-inch pipe bomb and two smaller bombs. He allegedly snuck them into Tallman Mountain State Park and blew up the two smaller devices. Each was equipped with a sophisticated battery-powered ignitor and was packed with BB pellets to add to their power.

Investigators believe the suspect, who was accompanied to the park with his cousin, was seeking fame on the Internet where plenty of videos of homemade bombs can be found on popular sites such as YouTube.

"Our fear is that these young people experimenting with these types of devices could cause imminent danger," said Rockland County Sheriff James Kralik.

Families who frequent the park were shocked to hear about the explosives being set off.

"You can't even go to a park with your children now. You don't know what's gonna happen, it's just awful," said park patron Julie Blauvelt.

Police say park patrons were put at risk and that the teen is lucky he didn't blow himself up. He left court in handcuffs Monday after bond was set at $10,000. His family, who says Estevez is a good kid who is just having a bad year, hopes to have him back home tonight.

Earlier in the summer, he was also arrested on a shoplifting charge.

Hope you had fun at Foxwoods.....did you hear about Super Duper Weenie on the Food
Network show "Diners Drive-ins and Dives" w/ Guy Fieri? It was so fun to see a place
from my town featured on there! :D Let me know when you'll be down my way, and
