Josh Miles had been an avid tabletop role player for most of his life, from his discovery of DND at the age of 13 till this night. He had recently turned 40 and was still going strong in his love of tabletop games. His group had recently switched over to the latest edition of Pathfinder and were about to start up a new campaign. Tonight was the night the group was supposed to get together to draw up characters.
As Josh pulled out of his driveway, a light rain began to fall. He wasn't really fond of the rain while driving and hoped that it wouldn't rain much harder. He had a couple of close calls during the rain in the past from slick roads, so he hoped nothing bad would happened. However, fate had decided to change that as the rain picked up, pounding harder and faster as he was only a few minutes from the meeting place. Even with his wipers on the fastest setting, he could barely see out the window at the barely lit country road he had to travel.
The thought that he should showdown or pull over did cross his mind, but he did feel that he could make it. Tragedy struck at the final intersection just five minutes from the meeting spot. There was just enough water on the road that he began to hydroplane as he approached, no amount of brake stomping and screaming slowing him down. A large pickup lost traction as well coming from the left crossroad of the intersection, slamming into the driver's seat of the small car. Josh's car was sent flying sideways down the road, tumbling end of over into a large ditch along the side of the road.
Landing upside down int the water-filled ditch, his head slammed into the roof of the car as his seatbelt failed. With both of the front windows shattered and gone, he was left unconscious in a foot of rushing water through the upside down car. He could have possibly been saved by the driver of the truck, but she was knocked unconscious as her airbag failed and she hit her head on the steering wheel. The truck stayed on the road, but ended up sideways blocking the road. The darkness seemed to last forever as his life slipped from him as he drowned in his own car.
Josh suddenly jerked awake founding himself floating a void of white, the last memory of him being in his compact car. He did recall flying through the air, the sounds of shattering glass, screeching metal and then darkness. As he looked around, he didn't see anyone else around.
"Well, this is just great. How am I going to get back home?"
He had no idea how much time passed for him, but he was soon feeling a tugging sensation. At the same time, he began to scream as it felt as if dread was creeping through his body, or what he thought was his body.
----------
There was a deep growl from the large form laying in the middle of a large cavern. The cavern was well light by several burning torches, many of which were just haphazardly placed. Large mounds of gold, gems, and various other items like magical equipment was scattered around the cavern. Several openings dotted around the large cavern, seeped in deep darkness to hide the contents of those rooms or passages. Another groan was heard, followed by the shifting of valuables around the large chromatic dragon. The large eyelids of the dragon slowly opened, revealing scarlet red eyes that took a few moments to adjust to the flickering torch light.
The dragon was silent as he lifted his head, taking in the whole strange scene. If another creature or being had been there as well, they would have noticed the look of confusion on the dragon's face. It was several seconds before the dragon spotted a large mirror several yards away, askew on a smaller pile. The dragon slowly lifted up from where he was laying before stopping. He shifted his head to look down at himself, taking in his body. He shook his head as if this was some dream before moving to the mirror, stopping to looking at the reflection of himself.
The dragon was silent as he looked at the dragon in the mirror staring back. He finally spoke, though it was to no one. "What the hell is going on? Is that me? I'm a dragon now?"
His left front claws lifted up and pressed under his chin, talons splaying out around his jaw as the reflection did the same. He remained like that for a few seconds before turning away to find the way out. He needed to see where he had ended up. It took a few moments to find his way outside to a large mountainside ledge which jutted out from the cavern opening to form a large perch for him.
He settled down on the ledge as he took in what seemed to be his new home. His home was currently in the upper portion of a very high mountain range, sitting just below the snowline. He couldn't tell truly, but it seemed to stretch out for as far as he could see on either side of him. Nestled up against the foot of the mountains was a large, lush forest stretching as far as he could see. The leaves were bright green and vibrant, which made him think it was summertime. He wasn't sure about distances yet, but he did noticed what seemed to be a bustling city of some sort. There were high walls surrounding the city and the architecture seemed to made with the thought of beauty, as well as functionality. The architecture seemed to remind him of being of elvish origin. He wondered what sort of races were in this new world he foundt himself in.
"I seemed to have taken over the mind and body of this dragon. And judging by his horde, he's been around for quite a long time. I wonder what his relationship was with the locals was."
