Of the five senses humans rely on sight most. People take sight for granted as they use it every day of their lives at every moment. They begin to pick and choose what they wish to see and create an illusion that better serves them, becoming blind to reality. Throughout Oedipus Rex Sophocles plays with sight versus blindness, both metaphorically and literally. He poses the question, would one be better off blind and able to see the world for what it really is, or to have sight but be blind to reality? In this play Sophocles uses irony to convey that even those with sight may be in the dark when it comes to seeing the truth.
When playing with sight versus blindness Sophocles uses Teiresias’ physical blindness to provide the play’s foundation for irony. This irony comes from Teiresias’ ability to see the future, despite his disability, and uses it to foreshadow Oedipus’ fate, “I tell you, no man that walks upon the earth/ Shall be rooted out more horribly than you” (line 416-417), along with foretelling Oedipus’ loss of physical sight, “A blind man,/ Who has eyes now.../… will go tapping the strange earth with his staff” (line 399-401) an ironic and necessary event for Oedipus before he can break free of his mental blindness. Teiresias is key to the irony that befalls in Oedipus Rex and is responsible for establishing the literal theme of blindness using this to show how Oedipus’ sight is all for naught.
