Nighthawk: A Superhero Story (closed for Siobhancan99)

Hadley reddened at the reference to her new man. “I don’t know. Would asking him today seem a little desperate? Or should I just mention I’m going to this thing and see how he reacts?” She let out a sigh. “Ugghh. I’m not good at any of this dating bullshit. Help.” She looked at Monica and Gabi.

“Don’t look at me. It took me, like, 6 years to land one kiss from my crush,” Gabi said, smiling and squeezing Monica’s side affectionately.

"I have the opposite problem. I fucked mine once and now I live with her." She grinned at her girlfriend and kissed her lower lip "I love you."

She slipped her hand along Gabi's side, brushing along her curves "hads you're in town for one week. The rules are a little different. If you mention what we're up to tonight and ask if he wants to meet up, its fine. You're on a short timetable."

Gabi laughed and lightly slapped Monica on the shoulder, then nuzzled her nose as they kissed.

Hadley nodded as they watched their train roll into place. “Okay. Cool. Cause I really really wanted to invite him,” she said, beaming.

“Look at you,” Gabi said, smiling and holding Monica’s hand as they found a pair of seats. “She’s glowing--I think there’s a glow.”

“Ugh,” Hadley responded, fighting another grin.

The train deposited them in Chinatown, and the three girls began wandering. Before long, Hadley guided them to a packed restaurant called Golden Diner. Hadley was polishing off the remainder of her egg and cheese sandwich on a sesame scallion milk bun when she received a text from Troy confirming he’d be able to make it to the second of the two movies that night. The theatre major texted a response a minute later than slipped off to use the restroom.

Gabi scooched in close to Monica when they’d both finished up their food and were waiting on their friend. “For a second when she said ‘Aidan and his girlfriend,’ I was like, oh noooo,” the brunette said with a smile. "That was pretty crazy last night."

Monica kissed her quickly "it was. Are we weird sex people? is that our thing?" She laughed and squeezed her girl in, kissing her again softly "I liked it. You seemed to like it." Her fingers traced along Gabi's back softly, tracing just along the edge of her top "I would do it again. But I mean, I don't feel like i HAVE to do it again. But I would." She curled Gabi against her "how are you feeling about everything, baby?"

Gabi flicked the top of a container of hoisin sauce. “I did. I did like it,” she said, lowering her voice despite the noisy din of the diner. “Are you sure you’re okay with it? I just feel like—sometimes I have thoughts and fantasies like that and I think maybe there’s something wrong with me. Like, I wanted to see you…and him…” Gabi blushed and she swirled a spoon into her complementary tea. “I just don’t want to…say or do something that makes you feel different about me, or…”

Monica flicked her tongue softly along Gabi's ear "you wanted to watch him fuck me you dirty slut?" She teased her fingers along the swell of Gabi's round ass "would that turn you on? or would you rather watch me get down on my knees and throat that big cock of his?" She was teasing her girl, but she'd do it for sure. Anything to turn Gabi into a puddle. "what makes that dirty little mind of yours the most excited? huh?"

“Yes,” Gabi said quietly, meekly. “I…I want—”

“Can I get you anything else?” their server asked, coming by with the check.

“No, thank you.”

A moment later, Hadley found her way back to their booth, then pulled out her card. Monica’s phone chimed.

DAD: I finished fixing your laptop. It took some doing but it seems to be running fine. Try not to drop it off any more tall buildings.

She knew he was referencing the Sliver.

DAD: Hope the trip’s going well. Say hi to Gabi for me.

The server came over to take their cards and Hadley zipped up her jacket. Gabi slipped her hand into Monica’s as they slipped out the door to do some more exploring in Chinatown. They lingered a few steps behind Hadley.

“I want to watch you ride him,” Gabi said softly, breathing warm air into Monica’s left ear.

"Kinky bitch" Monica laughed softly "ok. If we get a shot, and he's got protection, you can watch me." She kissed her girl and wrapped an arm around her, then steereed her closer to Hads "So remind me of this double feature? Also super cool your man friend is coming along. What's his name again?"

Hadley looked through an antique store shelf featuring numerous porcelain figurines depicting Chinese people and various spirits or creatures. Her eyes resting on a red, whiskered dragon, she said, “BMX Bandits and Gleaming the Cube. The bandits one apparently features a young Nicole Kidman.”

“Who?” Gabi asked, looking at a crimson scarf.

“She’s in a million things. She’s the taxidermist in Paddington.”

“Oh, got it.” The Latina took a moment to respond to a text.

“Troy,” Hadley responded to Monica. “Yeah, I’m a little excited. It’s kinda like you and Gabs—we were friends forever, although not, like, as close as I think you two were. But he was always just so fun to hang out with and so nice and I felt like I could be myself around him. Even back in high school, you know? So...any advice about dating a friend?"

They were waiting at another subway station to take them to the east side when Monica noticed a personal email notification.

The subject line read: Congratulations! Welcome to Vigil

It was the first word Monica had gotten. Despite not attending the career fair, Gabi had sent out a number of applications with no word as of yet.

"Well. I guess what you have to ask yourself Hads is whether this guy is a 'nice fling during spring break' kind of thing or a 'I might move back to New York or he might move to Prospect City' kind of thing. If it's just this week you fuck him a bunch, send naughty texts now and again to keep him as a fuck buddy or potential future thing and leave it be. If you genuinely think there's some kind of future well. I don't know how to maintain a long distance relationship. Tom came home or I went to Prospect City every weekend pretty much. I fortunately had a pretty chill dad that was all just 'don't get pregnant' and that was about it."

She shrugged and sipped at her Dr. Pepper, wrapping an arm around Gabi "Nicole Kidman is that old lady with the human growth hormone face that does the AMC thing before the movies." She shrugged and looked over some of the figurines, liking this little jade Buddha and contemplating buying it till she saw the 400 dollar price tag. "maybe not" she muttered.

When they got to the subway she showed Gabi the email "looks like I'm all set up for summer. I'll have to find an apartment looks like." She shrugged "Im sure my dad will be glad to have the house to himself. Probably super awkward to hide fucking your girlfriend from your daughter while she's hiding fucking her girlfriend from you." She smirked and ran her fingers along Gabi's back "you at least have the drugstore gig right? Will your parents want you to come home?"

Hadley had a contemplative look on her face. “Yeah, that’s a good question. I’m hoping we’ll be able to do weekends a couple times before the end of the semester and then hang out a bunch this summer, though my dad might need me and there’s my mom’s wedding.” She sounded wistful. “Anyway, I’ll carpe the fuck out of this diem in the meantime.”

“Oh my god!” Gabi’s said at Monica’s news, throwing her arms around her. “Way to go, baby! So proud of you.” If there was any envy on her part, she was masking it perfectly. “And it’s paid. Hello,” she added playfully twirling some black hair around a finger in mock seduction mode.

“I was looking into this a little and all the places I’m finding are crazy expensive,” Gabi noted. “Even the campus apartments. So, I’m kinda like, do I try to find a place in PC and work crazily hard just to pay rent and maybe eat, or should I try to find a job back home over the summer and just stash away everything?”

“That’s what I’m doing,” Hadley noted, removing a tissue and sneezing into it. “Especially if this Troy thing is an actual thing. Otherwise, it’s gonna kinda suck. Lots of quality time with the bride-to-be plus the new stepfamily. Hopefully, Aidan will stop moping full-time and move out.”

Monica chuckled "yeah. i'll make enough to pay the rent and some ramen." She tugged Gabi in "I shouldn't bitch. A lot of people will be getting unpaid internships." She ran her hand over Gabi's side, then nestled in against her. She nodded to Hads "yeah I mean, summer fling is a pretty good reason to come back to New York, especially if it might be more." She shrugged and held Gabi close "and Aiden just really needs to get laid and he will be fine."

Hadley strode forward as their train approached, her black and burgundy hair floating lightly in the spring breeze. “Well, in any case, congrats. Pretty much no one gets an internship in their first year. Except for Nick, but Nick was a freak.”

“All those extracurriculars in high school paid off,” Gabi said, still beaming.

As Hadley had promised, the east side had an abundance of thrift stores that put even Prospect City’s robust collection to shame. Gabi picked out a multi-hued sundress, an astronaut Barbie for her sister, some Pokémon cards for her younger brother, and a vintage Godzilla plastic collectible cup for her older brother.

Gabi and Monica came across Hadley holding a vintage U2 t-shirt. “It’s for my dad,” she said more than a little defensively as if she expected to be immediately chided for her musical tastes.

“How’s he doing?” Gabi asked, picking up a canary yellow bucket hat and plopping it on her head.

“Eh. He has his good days and his bad days. I’m honestly worried about ditching him for the City this summer. Literally all he does his sit in the house now and take Iggy out for short walks. He says he’s working on a novel but I never actually see him writing.”

Gabi wore a concerned look on her face and put the hat back on the rock. “Honestly, sometimes I wonder if he and vigilante girl had, like, a thing,” Hadley mused.

"My dad loves U2. He says everything after Rattle and Hum is crap, but everything before it is genius." She shrugs "I dunno. i really like that song 'One'. Tom used to play it when we were riding around in his car and his prior relationship was disintegrating." She felt a little wistful "it's a good tune." When talk turned to Hadley's dad, Monica shook her head "In my head, he's more the Gary Oldman to her Christian Bale you know? He's the law that makes sense of the order kind of thing. Like they need each other, but there aren't any mustache rides. Not that there's not probably 200 erotic stories written about each pairing on some scandalous erotica website." She laughed "of various qualities. then of course there is the inevitable slashfic that also writes the nighthawk out of that relationship with her dying terribly and your dad nailing the author insert on the roof next to his Nighthawk-signal while telling her she's so much stronger inside than the heroine was."

Hadley’s expression softened as Monica reminisced. “Yeah. They have some good songs. Just wish I hadn’t heard them a million times growing up.”

They made their way over to the cash register. “No no no no no,” the theater major protested as Monica speculated on slashfic. “Unless you want to see my breakfast again, I’ma stop you right there.” She grinned and leaned down to eye a pair of boots sitting on a low shelf.

As promised, Troy and his friend, Arlo, a hulking, somewhat paunchy guy with green hair, met up with the girls before the second film. After the screening ended around 11:45, the group migrated to a club called Good Room where a 20-something DJ with an enormous afro was spinning vaguely apocalyptic-sounding dance music. Hordes of attractive 20-somethings were jammed into the space, while outside, a torrential April rain was falling.

At a certain point, Gabi and Monica waited by the bar as Troy and Hadley did their thing and Arlo, now inexplicably shirtless, stepped outside for a smoke.

"You two," bartender, a surly-looking 30-something with multiple piercings said as Gabi and Monica stood nearby. "Guy down there wants to buy you drinks." The bartender nodded down the bar, where an attractive guy in his late 20s with short brown hair and a neatly maintained beard sat nursing a glass of beer. He was dressed in a black suit jacket over a red t-shirt, looking over at the two college students with interest.

"Oh, thanks!" Gabi said with a cheery smile aimed at the service worker.

"IDs," he said flatly but definitively.

"Thanks" She turned and looked over at the guy at the bar. She slid her one arm around Gabi and kissed her cheek, then raised her glass to the guy in thanks. She took a sip, assuming since the bartender gave it to her it was safe. She then headed over with Gabi in tow/ She leaned in, shouting over the music "Thanks for the drink." She wasn't sure about his sartorial choices, but that was no reason to turn down free booze.

Gabi took a sip, wrapping an arm around Monica’s midsection. The stranger smiled casually as they approached.

“You’re welcome,” he said, taking another sip and casting his blue eyes back down at his foamy glass momentarily. From this distance, it was evident that the black suit jacket was downplaying a strong physique. An expensive timepiece hung from his wrist. “I need your opinion on something,” he called above the din. “I work for a talent agency that signs models and actors. Is there a good way to bring this up in a club that doesn’t make it sound like a line? Open to ideas."

Monica rolled her eyes and sipped at her drink "there's literally no way to bring that up in a club without it sounding like a line" she wrapped her arm around Gabi "unless you are maybe wearing a mesh t shirt and have a little twink in your lap. But you don't seem the type for either." She chuckled and ran her fingers lightly along Gabi's back. "We're not really models though, and we're just in New York for the night so. not struggling actresses either."

“Note taken,” the man said as Gabi played with the tips of some of Monica’s locks. “I’m not great at leaving work in the office. But if you two seriously not given any thought to modeling or acting, you owe it to yourselves to at least think it over.”

“Kinda leaning more toward evolutionary biology and biomedical research,” Gab said with a grin, “what about you, baby?” She nuzzled Monica’s cheek lightly.

"hmm maybe you should think about it baby. It'd pay the rent this summer. Plus you're super hot." She ran her fingers over Gabi's ass and gave it a playful swat. "I'm a robotics girl. I could get behind seeing my hand in a catalogue though or something" making a joke about hand modeling "if you think I've got the fingers for it."

Gabi blushed and subtly pressed her curvy rear against her lover’s hand. “I don’t know,” she said, turning her gaze to Monica, a gleam of mischief in her eyes, “all those people looking at me in my underwear…”

The brown-haired guy grinned at Monica’s remark. “Absolutely. I can have those hands on 50 billboards in Hokkaido by Monday morning.”

Taking another sip, he said, “So...here's the thing," he called above the thunderous beats, "you’re obviously smarter than me so you don’t need me to tell you that with a decent ring light and a willingness to peddle scientifically dubious fitness products, each of you could easily pull in 6 figures within 6 months of going hard on the influencer-model grind, all without having to share a dime with representation of any kind. But if you want to eliminate about 10% of the bullshit and have the opportunity to eventually go in some really cool directions, that’s when you’d want to consider something like our agency.”

Across the room, Hadley and Troy re-entered the club, soaked from head to toe.

"I'm guessing its a little less organic right? Like you get us a certain number of followers and exposure and such?" She hmmed "Honestly it seems like a ton of hard work, just different." the idea had its merits. If she had a steady stream of income she could just fuck off and be the Nighthawk every night without having to worry about a day job. She wasn't sure she could put the content together. She was gregarious but it seemed like a whole different skill set to make those videos. Still it appealed to what vanity she did have "So if we wanted to do this, how would we get in touch with you?"

A slight smile appeared on the guy’s lips. “I’m pretty sure any women as stunning as you two could rack up a couple million followers without my help. No, we’d do everything we could to minimize that stuff. Get your pics to the right people in Milan, Paris, Hollywood, you name it. You’d never have to tell a single follower to ‘smash that Like and Subscribe button' if you didn't want to. One of my clients just landed a role in the next Scream movie.”

Hadley and Troy were dancing together again, seemingly unconcerned about the state of their clothes. The man pulled out a business card and handed it to Monica.

Grant Browning
Talent Agent
Skyward Entertainment
NYC – Los Angeles – London – Vancouver

The man’s socials and contact information were listed below.

“Our friend is actually a theater major,” Gabi said, pointing across the club to where Hadley and Troy danced bathed in a neon green light.

Monica tensed, knowing what was going to come. He was going to politely say Hadley wasn't really what they were looking for. SHe hoped it wasn't the case, as this would be a good opportunity, but she guessed that as she and Gabi were both a little prettier than their friend he would make some polite noises but put them off. Also if he was some kind of predator, Hadley was there with a guy so... same result. Still she looked over at the girl as she came in, then back to the guy "I can go get her if you want..."

Browning looked across the crowded club. “It looks like she’s a little occupied at the moment,” he said as he glanced over to where Hadley and Troy were sliding together. He produced another business card with the ease of a stage magician pulling out the ten of hearts. “Give her my card and have her DM me.”

It was Gabi’s turn to roll her eyes as her posture stiffened.
