Nighthawk: A Superhero Story (closed for Siobhancan99)

Annabel smiled. “Awesome.” Berto and Cristina made a quick trip over to the counter to grab a few more snacks. “Well, I know Eve thinks you’re great. She told me about your…situation and said she’d only bring me if I promised not to flirt too hard.” She chuckled. Winking, the sundress-clad girl added, “So, this is me not flirting too hard. How am I doing?”

Monica smirked and made a so-so gesture "well enough you can come back, and thanks for being understanding. It was cool of Eve to let you know. I am a bit of a wreck personally." She laughed and pulled her leg up so she could wrap one arm around it and rested her chin on her knee. "But you know, that's all one day at a time shit. I'm trying to not dwell on it. At the end of the day Gabi wanted things to be basically like they were when we were growing up. She hated this town, when she gets out of med school i can see her going on to work at Geisinger or some rural health system, and living 10 minutes from her mom." She looked over "and I'm not going back. I think she knew that, which is why she never discussed the move with me. Like, what she did was shitty and it hurts and it is awful but like. I dunno. Maybe it had to happen at some point? I can't hate on her for choosing the life that will make her happy." She drained her beer "So what about you? any broken hearts back at the college after you left?"

Annabel listened. “That sucks. I’m sorry.” She sipped at her tea some more.

“I mean…we’ve all had bad breakups, right? But I like, really try to live in the moment as much as I can.” She eased her hand alongside the lip of the counter so it rested against Monica’s, then almost imperceptibly stroked the top of the green-eyed girl’s hand. “Like…right now? I’m nicely buzzed and there’s music and my friend’s having a blast and I’m sitting next to the girl I haven’t been able to stop looking at since I got here. Good moment.”

Grinning, she added, “Eve is going to kill me."

Monica took the hand and squeezed it "You're fucking cute, and that has not gone unnoticed" she let go of Annabel's hand "but you should strongly consider the possibility that Eve isn't looking out for me but is instead looking out for you because I just got out of a relationship and I'm very much not looking to get back into one. I mean, not like, forever, but for now." She grinned "but I am having a good time and I think you're incredibly attractive" she slipped off the counter and got herself another beer and fished out her phone, ordering pizza. She sipped at her beer and looked over to Annabel "but yeah, its a pretty good moment."

There was a brief look of confusion on the blue-eyed girl’s face. She looked as if she was about to interject, then flashed another slight smile at the compliment, and placed her empty bottle on the counter before pulling out her phone to begin scrolling.

The pizza arrived about 25 minutes later, just as most of the party was settling down into Monica’s living room area, some of them packed onto her couch and loveseat, others staking out positions on the floor, one arm wrapped around a throw pillow. Hadley had pulled up another microscopically low-budget affair in which a middle-aged super hacker who seemed to know woefully little about actual computers went on vague anti-corruption rants in between laughable love scenes. Going to the kitchen to grab some plates, Monica spotted Cristina and Zoe on her small back deck, kissing each other deeply as the Latina’s hand massaged the blonde girl’s rear.

Shortly after, her friends began filing out, saying their goodnights and thank yous.

Monica made sure to hug Annabel on her way out and to get her contact information. She wasn't ready for a relationship, but the girl might be down to just hook up and if not, maybe in a few months they'd both be in a place to do something more than have a bit of fun. She sighed, starting to clean up. She was smiling though, the memory of the cute blond, the happiness of her friends. They were starting to cut through the gloom a bit. She texted Zoe as she hadn't seen her leave and thought she might still be out back "you two can stay in the spare room if you're at that point. or not." then returned to cleaning.
