On the high seas

Captain

"I don't think so, after all you've lied and cheated your way aboard. Do you think to be treated better than a liar and a thief? Besides I think I should get to know my personal servant." I tug her below deck to a small chamber I occasional use for hauling slaves and bolt and lock the door. The room is dark with chains and other such things glinting malisciously in dark.

Janelle

While hauling loot into the common openings near the path, I look around to see the young one taking booty to the ship. I do feel bad for him. I could tell by his exuberance that he wanted some excitement. I decide to ask the Captain if he can take one of the girls as his personal servant. Turning back to the job at hand, I head towards the ship with a load of grain.

Kyos

While I hauled in the treasure, I noticed Bethany being pulled away, and scolded by the captain. I couldn't let this happen, Bethany may not remember me, but she was still my friend. I quickly ran toward the small chamber, only to find it locked. I began to punching, and kicking at the door, but even my powerful blows wouldn't break it down. I then noticed a keyhole in the door. Hopeing for Bethany's well being, I peered inside the keyhole, checking if she was okay.

Bethany:
The Captain pulled me into a room and slammed the door shut, throwing me to the floor. how should I play this was running through my mind? Bold and brash or scraed? Which would she fall for?
But a hand twisted into my hair told me she wasn't going to fall for anything but the truth.

Captain

"So my little muffet, what are you running from and who is looking for you and do you want the company of that sailor who seems to want to protect you? There are worses fates, I don't take any bullshit so you can forget that right now. This is my ship and on it I am God, the only way to leave is if you think you can swim. For there is no way to get a boat off my ship, and if you think I'll let you go ashore on a whim you'd better think again."

Bethany:

Her words ring true. Okay truth. I have tried everything else. Why not hat?

"I am Bethany, a thief. Caught by a miserable law man as I tried to escape my last job." My thoughts wandered. As strong as I was, and as often as I had stolen, I had never hurt anyone before. "I paniced and he fell off the roof. I swear it was an accident. But they won't hear that will they?" Drawing myself up, as much as I was able with her hands still holding me.
"As for passage. I can pay, if you take gold or jewels in trade. Yes, my booty as you call it. As for him." Pointing at the door. "I could have known him, but I remember nothing of my childhood. nothing. And I do not want to begin now."His pounding had ceased and we could hear voices.

"Or if you won't let me pay I can earn my way. I called myself your personal servant. I am trained in that." Smiling. "Makes breaking in easier when you know the layout and habits of the house."

Captain

"I'll take it under consideration. You will turn over all your booty to my second in command Janelle. That way you can't have it stolen or use it to attempt escape. We're travelling to a prison island next. It's more for finding worthy sailors and killing off some scum than anything. After that we hit a couple of ports before heading out to sea. I will collect the cost of the trip when you decide to leave." I spin and unlock door and knock the young man on his ass. "Serves him right for standing so close to the door. If you feel safer in my quarters you may rest there, but don't expect preferential treatment. Everyone works hard here."

Kyos

I was a bit stunned as I fell over, but I did flip, and got back up again. I was glad that Bethany was okay. The captain was a tricky person, but I knew very well she would lose to me in combat. I also willing to bet that she knew my father, but I didn't really have the guts to ask. I then turned to Bethany, "you are okay right?"

Bethany:
I half ducked behind the Captain as the boy had spoken. "I am fine. Listen, I don't know you. Maybe, once upon a time I did. But, there is no past here. Right Captain?" Willing her to agree with me, to keep my past, the past. Maybe here I would find what I was looking for.

Captain

I could see she was upset by the young man who looked entirely too brash to me. I smiled and said, "The past is unalterable, one must face it, or it will forever haunt you. However if this man bothers you in the present. Something can be done about that." My voice wavers on edge of threat as I usher her away.

Bethany:

I let her lead me away, in awe of her poise. Then draw myself off and shrug off her hand. "It is nice of you to help me. You could have thrown me over. But i know something you should know. They know where you were heading, and why." Pausing to let the words sink in. As a thief I heard things, from people who should keep their mouths shut. I knew where she was heading, and so did the lawmen. And they were waiting.

Captain

I found myself chuckling, as she revealed this. "That is what I want them to think." I pause wiping tears from my eyes from laughing so hard. "One of my lovers is well very much involved in law enforcement. I feed him rumors, lies, and half truths, among other things. He catches a few of my enemies and has been getting promoted ever since." I pause in my laughing. "If however this person was specific about our plans, that's not possible, I only make our travel plans while we are in the water." I think over the members of my crew. "If someone managed to betray me, he will have his balls displayed on my door until they wilt." The words are said without a hint of vengeance.

Kyos

I was bothering her!? I only talked to her once, and she said I was bothering her? It seemed she didn't want to talk about her past. I shrugged, "fine, I just thought you'd remember me, thats all. But if I'm bothering you, then fine. I'll stay out of your way from now on, in fact, I'll pretend I've never seen you before in my entire life okay?" I was a bit angry, but I understood. I got back to hauling loot on board.

Bethany:
I couldn't control the laugh that blurted out. So the Captain and I had shared a lover, in a sense. For all he had from me was a lovely kiss and the thrill of explaining how the Captain of the Lawmen had been robbed.
"If you are the Captain. Why didn't you lead today's raid?"

Captain

"Because today's raid was for simply supplies and the men's satisfaction. This island has long been depleted of men of fighting age. The women that remain are pretty much used to being raided. This trip was just to take off the edge of a long trip. We'll probably hit it again when we come back this way. Besides Janelle is perfectly capable of loading supplies, and I prefer to tend to my ship."

Bethany:
I felt eyes on me again, and turning saw him watching. There was something about the move of his head, the profile that reminded me of someone. Had I known him? Would he know what had happened to me, to make me forget? But the Captain's hand held me to now.
"I am really a personal valet. Though mostly for men, it helps in my trade. But I also sew, cook and play a mean game of cards."

Captain

I take the time to show her around, the galley, the washroom, and foodstocks. "If I find you filching extra food or anything else for that matter you will find yourself without an ally upon this ship. However I won't ask you to do anything against your will as your previous employers undoubtedly did." I take her chin in my hands seeing the traces of bruises and ill treatment and more lying in her eyes.

I pulled away with a shrug. "I am your humble servant Captain." Bowing as I had practised. But when my eyes met hers I knew she wasn't joking.
"So, when do I meet this infamous first mate?"

Captain

I glanced up at sky, "We'll be leaving at sundown. She'll be last one back. On this island you have to make sure you don't leave anyone behind." I watch the practiced bow and avoid chiding or reprimanding her. It wasn't my job to break down her defenses. At least not today.

"What would you have me do till then?" Needing to get away fro her to plan, decide what I should do. Was the island really as she said? Yes. In that she hadn't lied. Actually, I didn't think she had at all. Why? She could have left me here to rot and die but was giving me a chance. Why?

Captain

"Why don't you see if they found any potatoes, I'm sure cook would appreciate the help in storing the provisions." I wave her away watching the boats haul in food and trinkets.

Wandering off I flet unsure, and slightly nervous. Winding my way through her crew to find the galleys. The large man threatening me till I played up to him. Then he realized I was willing to do anything he wanted and soon found myself with a pile of potatoes and then fish to prepare. Watching everyone moving around and listening, listening hard.

Kyos

I hauled the last of the loot on board, and saw the rest of the crew walk out of the houses with a blissful look on thier faces. I turned to see another man walk out of an alleyway, and came out with a fourteen year old girl, it was sickening, I felt like cutting his throat right then, and there. I turned to the captain, "thats the last of the loot captain, should we set sail yet?"

Captain

"We'll wait until Janelle rounds up any stragglers, we're not the only ship that lands here. Though we are perhaps one of the kinder ones." I glance towards isolated section of homes, "That's where those who have been beaten up recooperate."
