One hit wonders

+PS. a lot of the artists mentioned had more than one hit in the UK but never made it big in the US.

Speaking of hits in the UK, did the Woozles ever have another hit after _Combine Harvester_?

The Wurzle's did indeed have another hit but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.....OH hold on yes I can it was "I am a cider drinker" sung to the tune of a song by Johnathan King who is being tried for kiddie porn the evil bastard.

you supprise me by even knowing who The Wurzles were.BTW they are still around.

Rick Springfield Jesse's Girl and Don't talk to strangers.

I love the songs but he was much better to watch as Dr Noah Drake on General Hospital.

I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters (Near Ipswich) when_Combine Harvester was number one. Thanks for correcting the spelling <G>

The Wurzles are the type of group that is fun to have around. Much like Ray Stevens and Weird Al Yankovich are here.

!!!RAF Bentwaters!!! god's teeth man I'm sure I used to go to scooter rallies near there.

Sorry lolfrk, Glass Tiger could never be considered a one hit wonder.

Have you forgotten Someday, Thin Red Line, Hungry Eyes and I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight, just to name a few of their other great songs?

STARGUARD: "Which Way Is Up?"
I apologize to those who may not know or remember this song or group. It was from the soundtrack to a 1978 Richard Pryor movie of the same name.

Madness? Joe Jackson? Midnight Oil?

Joe Jackson's first two albums (Look Sharp! and I'm The Man) were probably the best pop albums in back to back years, and received Grammy nominations for best new artist and album, if I recall. "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is still a great tune. Several years prior to "Night and Day"

Madness was the most popular of the Two-Tone bands. Only had about two dozen hits in the UK.

And Midnight Oil dominated college charts in this country for a long time with songs like "Blue Sky Mine" and "Forgotten Years".

Oh, and Paul Young. There were two different Paul Youngs. The one who died last year sang for Sad Cafe and Mike and The Mechanics. The one who covered "Every Time You Go Away" is still around.

These don't necessarily have to be good songs, right?

Rock the Boat- the Hues Corporation
Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas
Radar Love - Golden Earring
Convoy - CW McCall
Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band
Aint No Stoppin Us Now -Mcfadden and Whitehead
Don't Worry, Be Happy- Bobby McFerrin
Band of Gold -Freda Payne

Thanks BB, I can't believe I forgot McFadden & Whitehead. I used to love that song back in 79'.

"THESE BOOTS"--Nancy Sinatra

Juliangel:
Glass Tiger did do Someday which I had forgotten. But I listened to the song Thin Red Line and where I live in east butt fuck central New York it was never a hit. I have never even seen a video for it. So to me Glass Tiger is a 2 hit wonder.
Hungry Eyes is by Eric Carman.(sp?)
I Just Died in Your Arms is Cutting Crew.

Ron G:
I had forgotten Is She Really Going Out With Him, must be my mind forgets really shitty songs. I much prefer his song Real Men over Is she Really Going Out With Him. But hey that's just me.
Madness? Sorry I don't know of any other HIT songs they have done in the U.S. I barely even know the song Our House since I was like 9 when it came out.
And as for College Charts...I don't know anything about that either. When Midnight Oil was on the radio where I live I was all of 14. I don't recall any other songs or videos done by them. So that makes them a One Hit wonder in my mind.

I Just Died in Your Arms is Cutting Crew.

Glass Tiger also recorded both of those songs.

Juliangel:
I went to Napster and did a search with Glass Tiger and both songs. I found both songs and downloaded one of each. The Hungry Eyes song I got was Eric Carman and the I Just Died in Your Arms that I got was by Cutting Crew. They are labeled wrong. I also went to Amazon.com and looked up every Glass Tiger album made. I could find neither of the songs on any of their albums not even their greatest hits.

I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight is also listed as by REO Speedwagon on some searches on Napster, but if you listen to it, it's the Cutting Crew version.

I will clarify what is typically (at least in my mind) thought of as a one hit wonder - a group or artist who really does very little outside of one single and in some cases doesn't even release a second record. The US Top 40 isn't typically the only barometer of these things. If so, we can think of other one hit (or no hit) wonders like Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven), Talking Heads (Burning Down the House), Elvis Costello (Everday, I Write the Book), and Jimi Hendrix (I think All Along The Watchtower was his only Top 40, but I could be wrong). If an artist doesn't fit into the radio payola formats of Top 40 but does produce good music that are well-regarded in other styles or formats over a lengthy period it doesn't seem to fit the category but hey, it's a BB not a college debate.

And Eric Carmen is another case. Yes, some people know "Hungry Eyes" but "All by Myself" and a number of hits with The Raspberries spread over almost two decades would seem to disqualify him. But only in my opinion. Others can differ.

Thank you I stand corrected, that is what I get for listening to my husband. Now I can scratch those off my download list for him.
