The Democrat's big schtick, is that they are there to protect the mouth-breathers whom vote for them en masse. Who is more likely to be a racist? One of the mouth-breathers, or somebody trying to run a business...

This is the answer. A few crumbs will go for McCain when they get in the booth.
The demonstrations that CNN was having so much fun with included less than 100 demonstrators. Those demonstrators for the most part only demonstrated for CNN cameras while Chris Mathews pissed himself with glee.

In a way I'll be glad if they do vote the other way. It means they're voting their conscience and not just the party. Some will be because of race of course but I'd bet most aren't due to that.

I guess it depends on what you mean by policies.
As far as I see it there are four possible stances that have any chance of winning:
Conservative Republican
Liberal Democrat
(the most popular of the four)
Liberal Republican
Conservative Democrat
(not as popular but not as unheard of as most people think)
I would put McCain closer to the Liberal Republican category than anything else and that might win over some Democrats.
(Ironically I think Bill Clinton was far closer to being a conservative Democrat and may be a reason for his popularity).
