Have any of you come across stories by authors that made you want to cancel all plans to read everything they’ve ever published, just to click on their profile and realise they’d dropped one that felt like it was written purely for you then disappeared?

Who are your favourite debutant geniuses and why do you think people do that when they’ve written well rated stories with a comment section begging for more?

There are a bunch of one-story authors in Loving Wives for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the tough crowd, but mostly because I think the guys that wrote them are doing it as therapy. I don't remember most of those therapy stories, but there's one gem of a real, honest to god near-professional tale that absolutely stands out in my mind: Play It Again, Sam by kublicon.

Dude showed up, dropped this absolutely fantastic Groundhog Day-meets-Loving Wives story in the category, scores an incredible (for LW) 4.8 with the final chapter, then vanishes. Because of the structure, it manages to be a mopefest AND a BTB AND a reconciliation (sort of) AND an adventure story AND basically everything anyone wanting to read a marital drama story could want. It's been seven years since he posted it, and I don't think he's coming back. I don't think it was someone slumming, either, unless it's under a different pen name; "kublicon" doesn't show up anywhere else on the internet I've found in a writing context, either.

I give you Common Law by Sophie Elia. Her only story: 4.86 in Lesbian Sex.

Plus Fighting Herself by Norwegian History. 4.84.

Also - cheating slightly as it is published as 11 chapters, but it is basically one story - Changes by Akshi.

I read all of them before I started writing and they include many of my favourite tropes of the genre, so in that sense they:

felt like it was written purely for you
(Though I'm not actually that self-centered, honest.)

I’ve had that with Neil Gaiman and Patrick Rothfuss though I guess their work just speaks to me. About the first novels, I like the idea of magical realism in the ‘Night Circus’ written by Erin Morgenstern. This implies that authors may stop writing because of sheer exhaustion, personal problems or other interests.

If you like Night Circus, you should try Starless Sea by Morgenstern. One of my absolute favorites.
