Elizabeth's arms instantly crossed over her chest in a defensive posture as Ian called her a caged bird. She had a slight scowl on her lips, her blue eyes looking down at the ground. She did want to believe that everyone had the capacity to be good. It was a much better life than constantly looking over your shoulder for the next bad thing to happen.
"I'm not so sheltered." She muttered, knowing that the notion was laughable at best.
Sheltered didn't even begin to describe her. Her father had gone through great lengths to ensure that Elizabeth didn't know about the world around her. Boarding school had been sheltered. Her home schooling before that had only gone over the basics. The first taste of freedom that she had ever experienced was the hellhole of an apartment which Stephen had put her up in. Ian had no reason at all to trust her intuition about the situation they found themselves in.
As Ian dashed to the door, scrambling to catch someone who wasn't there, Elizabeth moved to take his spot on the side of the tub. The water was a roar in her ears, drowning out the thoughts that wanted to drag her down. She could barely hear the conversation that Ian was having with Tom and when he entered back into the room, she let out a long sigh and shut off the water.
Surprise was written on her features as he told her that they were staying another night. Why had he suddenly changed his opinion? She didn't believe for a moment that he had been swayed by the thoughts of another good meal and a soft bed. Still, she wasn't about to make him reconsider what he was saying.
She stood, moving to wrap her arms around Ian's shoulders tightly. Hugging him, her cheek pressed against the naked skin of his chest.
"You won't regret it." She murmured softly. "And it means the world that you're willing to trust me."
