Danny watched it all play out. In many ways he felt like a pawn, but at least he was a pawn with a lot of people who had his back. Danny had tremendous respect for the City Chief, it was he who convinced him that his skill could bring some real good to some very difficult situations. There ha been ups and downs, but for the most part he had been right and Danny had accomplished what they had both hoped.
He watched Jess walk away with the boys and the rest of the team to speak to the commissioner. Something seemed off with her, but he didn't know what. Normally they had moments, shared things, had a connection, but today she was in one of her zones, that would be fine, he never pushed. But He had come in today, hoping for some time with the woman, the one that made him feel things no one else could.
They sat down. Thanks Chief! I do think it was a good shot, the only option, but I don't mind being second guessed. I suppose you heard about Jimmy?
The senior officer nodded solemnly, "the demons just became too much, huh? People don't understand the toll the fight in Afghanistan and Iraq have done to our soldiers, it is even worse than Nam, and I didn't think anything could be worse.
Danny knew the Chief was a vet, but they had never really exchanged stories, perhaps they would one day?
The chief reassured Danny he had made the right call. It wasn't really necessary, but it was nevertheless appreciated. He was told he could go home, but he looked at the Chief with the confusion of a man who isn't all that sure he has a home. He thought again about Jessie, it was where she was. When he was with her, he felt home, whether it was in the precinct, the job...a bar or her place...that was what he wanted. He pulled out the files and did his paperwork.
