Photo question from an illiterate

Is there a free program online that can be dowloaded or a fairly inexpensive program I can buy that handles making changes to photos? I currently have Adobe Photo Shop Album Starter which allows me to resize some and rotate position but thats about the extent of it. I am looking for something that will include red eye reduction, cropping, maybe transfer to black and white, etc.. just the basics really

You might want to do a search of the HT forum (say photo software) or check out the Blank Manual (it's one of the stickies). I know there have been a few threads providing names of free software but unfortunately I can't remember what the they were. infranview perhaps?

I use Adobe Photoshop 7, which I downloaded off the net. It's an expensive program so you wont want to buy it, but its good. Also, look into software from Kodak as they have good things for red eye and cropping.

The thread, Irfanview is the Answer, has several recommendations for Windows programs that will do what you want to do -- IrfanView is just the most versatile, IMHO.

If you're a MAC user, Adobe Photoshop is the only good image editor I know of for the MAC; it's available in several limited versions bundled with scanners and cameras so you aren't stuck with just the full, budget-breaking package as an option.

There's a bit of a learning curve involved, but you could also check out The GIMP

It's basically the poor man's Photoshop.

For something a little easier to learn, you could try Free Seriph Software

It requires a free registration online to activate the apps, but they're very good and easier to learn than Photoshop or The GIMP.

My printer and my digital camera both came with software that would do some photo touchups. Neither is extensive, but both do more than I've ever used. And if all you wanted to do is resize a pic (Itnsfr007), you can do that in the paint program that is part of windows.

Here's one that is suggested by PCWorld that will resize one or several pictures at once. Put this in your address line and download it.
Image Resizer Powertoy for Windows XP
You have to rt-click the picture or file, then select resize.
It seems to have standard sizes, but there is a custom selection where you can create an icon, for instance, by selecting screen size 150 x 150.
I just tried it and it worked well and quickly.
