It’s extremely rare over here for lakes of any decent size to freeze over enough to walk on, although it has happened

Lake Erie usually freezes (at least partially) most every winter here. We've never attempted walking on it before. But there was a small group of folks ice fishing much further out so we figured we were good.

Found an oversized set of plastic clothespin style clamps at the store yesterday I wanna try out
