It's not only race, you know. It's also gender and sexual orientation and, to some degree, religion. Straight male WASPs have to walk on eggshells, while black, Jewish lesbians can say pretty much whatever they want.

Box says that he's never especially had much power, and it's so very true for most WASP men. But, historically, they DID have power over non-whites and non-males. And like any relatively powerless group, abuses of that power were rife. No matter how much your Boss yelled at you, you could call your black servant "boy" and your wife "You bitch." YOu could force a woman to marry a man that she didn't love, and persecute her for loving a woman instead. Now, that power has been taken away. You can see how much the loss is resented, in posts like the OP.

Almost anybody could say the first one. I might attract some strange looks from people who know I am already married, but it would be acceptable.

The hypothetical black Jewish lesbian I mentioned before could say the second one. In fact, she could say: "I will not let honky assholes call me a kike nigger dyke any longer", and she would get away with it.

By the way, I would NEVER use any of those epithets when I was speaking for myself.

Eww. I don't think what Ferraro said was justified in the least.

I'm as disappointed in her as I was disappointed for Tiger Woods when he wouldn't speak out to let women compete in the Open tournaments.

Really, you'd think certain people would know better.

But no.

In the end, a disappointing majority of them, don't. They're just as self involved and unwilling to grant someone who "isn't them" the right to compete fairly.

I never had any power as a child, or an enlisted man in the Air Force, or after I left the AF either. Hundreds of years ago, some people did, but I wasn't alive hundreds of years ago to be one of them. Even then, most WASPs didn't have servants of any color, didn't address their wives as "you bitch" and never forced anybody to marry anybody. There were, and still are, laws about lesbianism, but there have usually been harsher laws and customs against male homosexuals, many of them WASPs.

I, personally, have never been rich and have never had any power. I don't particularly resent that, but I do resent people claiming that I did.

I think most white people, if they traced their ancestry back far enough, would find they are descended from slaves. They might have to go back a thousand years insted of 200, but it's still multiple generations ago. There is a technical difference between the serfdom of that era and the chattel slavery formerly practiced in the USA, but there are far more similarities.
