Pop music: wisdom

Pop music isn't known for being profound, but some pop lyrics are quite insightful and deep. What are a couple that impressed you with their wisdom when you first heard them?

A couple of mine:
"Please be stronger than your past/The future may still give you a chance" (Cowboys and Angels, George Michael)

"Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms/And the work I put between us, you know it doesn't keep me warm" (Heart of the Matter, Don Henley. Pretty much this entire song struck me that way, but we are busy people here, so I won't post all the lyrics)

How about you?

Too many to list.

Usually I can find a line or two or even a few that always had some kind of connection to me or my life at the time.

I usually liked the songs not just for the melody, but also for the lyrics, too.

Give me a song and I'll make a connection to it in some way if I know it or am familiar with it.

Wake me up before you go go, 'cause I'm not planning on going solo. -George Michael

just pick a chorus:

Another Night
Aretha Franklin

Uh
Check this out

All my friends have to ask if I'm shattered
I say the past is the past and it no longer matters
I've made my mind up, I can make it
I'll be fine even if I got to fake it
I'll keep survivin', ooh

Another night without you
Another night, I know I can get through
Another night, it's only
Another night, I won't be lonely

Another night
Another night
Another night, it ain't much
Another night without your touch

I used to search through the crowd to find you, huh
But I don't feel like it now, so don't look behind you, ooh
You better face it, I won't be callin'
I hit my stride when the evening is fallin'
I'm gonna make it, oh

Another night without you, hey
Another night, I know I can get through
Another night, it's only
Another night, I won't be lonely

Another night
Another night
Another night, it ain't much
Another night without your touch

And when the music is loud and the people are laughing
I'm gonna step on out, I won't be down
Gonna stand my ground for just
Another night
Oh, yes, I am
Another night

You were fazin' out, my sweet, and I knew it
You didn't give a damn how I got through it
But like you I have someone else too
Always there to keep me warm, no time for blue

I made my mind up, I can make it
I'll be fine even if I got to fake it
I'll keep survivin', yes, I will

Another night without you
Another night, I know I can get through
Another night, it ain't much
My man, I don't need you to keep bringin' me down, hey

Another night (without you)
Another night, (I know I can get through)
Another night, (it's only)
Another night, it's only
Another night, yeah, oh, yes, it is
(Another night)
(Another night)
I get so restless in my bed without you, boy
Oh, yes I do
(Another night)
Whoa and oh, I'm gonna make it now, yes, I am
You know that I am
(Another night)
There'll stand no talkin' at me, boy
No, no, no, no, no

"I don't wanna die
But I ain't keen on living either
Before I fall in love
I'm preparing to leave her
I scare myself to death
That's why I keep on running
Before I've arrived
I can see myself coming..."

Robbie Williams - Feel

Some people say that
Bowling alleys got big lanes
(Got big lanes, got big lanes)
Some people say that
Bowling alleys all look the same
(Look the same, look the same)
There's not a line that goes
Here that rhymes with anything (Anything, anything)
Had a dream last night
But I forget what it was
(What it was, what it was)

word.

Anthem
Leonard Cohen

The birds they sang at the break of day
"Start again", I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be

Ah, the wars they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again
Bought and sold and bought again
The dove is never free

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

We asked for signs, the signs were sent
The birth betrayed, the marriage spent
Yeah, the widowhood of every government
Signs for all to see

I can't run no more with that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up a thundercloud
And they're going to hear from me

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

You can add up the parts, you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march, there is no drum
Every heart, every heart to love will come
But like a refugee

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in

Too many shadows whispering voices
Faces on posters too many choices
If - when - why - what - how much have you got?
Have you got it? do you get it?
If so, how often?
Which do you choose -
A hard or soft option?
(How much do you need)?

Pet shop Boys - West end girls.

Profound

Start with...
Aretha: RESPECT
What you want
Baby, I got it
What you need
Do you know I got it?
All I'm askin'
Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)
Hey baby (just a little bit) when you get home
(Just a little bit) mister (just a little bit)

Bowie: Starman
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds

Bowie: Life On Mars
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the bestselling show
Is there life on Mars?

Talking Heads

How could I forget Animals...

I'm mad...and that's a fact
I found out...animals don't help
Animal think...they're pretty smart
Shit on the ground...see in the dark.
