The blackness was eternal. The nothing. The oblivion. Where fragments of thoughts erratically flickered, unable even to find enough cohesion for a dream. Just weightless, timeless drifting in the ocean of nowhere, that had gone on since forever. Would continue forever. That ...
There ...
Somewhere on the very edge of infinity reality was coalescing. Like the blood in a wound figments began to clot, to band together, stray threads of nothingness forming a thought. And that first thought attracted others, solidifying out of the swirling nether, teaming up, cooperating, interacting. And the thoughts became conscious.
It ... she … was waking.
Neurons were firing up once more as the grip of total sleep receded. She could think again. And she … Tina … her name was Tina … could sense. For the first time in aeons the outside found reception in the windings of her brain. A tugging to her left and right. Acoustic nose. Sound.
Only very faintly though. Tiny droplets causing faint ripples in a very large lake. A humming and buzzing that ever so slowly coalesced into a monotone mechanical voice.
”… vital functions at eighty percent, body temperature thirty three degrees Celsius.”
Now that her attention was drawn to it her mind registered the cold numbness clinging to her every fiber, every limb … she had limbs, hands, feet, she could sense them again. And ever so slowly again she could feel that very chill receding, driven away by a cozy comforting warmth enveloping her. Tentatively her brain began to fire commands, and on the third attempt one of her fingers twitched.
”Subject SB17 vital functions at ninety percent, body temperature thirty five degrees Celsius.”
The voice came from somewhere very close by. With every passing second her digits responded better to her attempts at keeping control. Here, now she was able to briefly lift her hand, an event that sent a myriad of new neuronic impulses all through her. And in a bout of daring Tina decided to open her eyes.
The opaque blur of color quickly condensed into solid shapes, revealing the plexiglass dome above her that dominated her field of vision. With her sight also her memories returned. How the attendant in the white lab coat with the concern so badly hidden on his face had led them to this chamber. Them. There had been another one. Flaming hair, light skin. They both had disrobed as requested and then climbed into the cryo pods. The latches had closed and then they had fallen into the cold embrace of sleep. A sleep it seemed that finally had come to an end.
”Subject SB17 vital functions at one hundred, body temperature thirty six degrees Celsius. Emergency wakeup procedure complete.”
The announcement was followed by a sharp hiss and a gust of air caressing the bare skin of her prone form as the pod depressurized and whatever mechanism was keeping the lid in place unlatched. She could observe the dome above her withdraw before it drifted to the left now giving her free sight on the monotone gray of the ceiling above her.
Three more seconds passed before she made the first attempt to rise. Even pulling up her arms seemed like a colossal effort at first, but it grew subsequently easier with each passing inch, and by the time she planted her palms next to her chest onto the padded steel and began to push upwards she once gain felt in control of her body.
Sitting upright was a good opportunity to survey the room. It matched her memory almost perfectly, the four bare walls, the two mirrored windows leading to the control room and the large, circular door, reminiscent of an airlock complete with a manual operating wheel. And next to her to her right, the other pod. Her sharp hearing picked up muffled noises from its inside, similar to the robotic voices that had escorted her awakening. So the other woman – Fiona, wasn’t it? - was also returning to wakefulness. Was she well?
That prompted her into action. First one tone slender leg and then the other was lifted out of the narrow confines and slung over the edge of the pod until it found firm footing on the ground beneath. The first step was still wobbly, but then she was at the other pod, both arms now able to support her, and as she leaned forward to get a better view on the occupant she once again felt the familiar heavy tugging on her chest caused by her massive breasts swinging into position.
The girl inside was still inert, stretched legs, arms at her sides, eyes closed and ….
But what was that?
