The blackness was eternal. The nothing. The oblivion. Where fragments of thoughts erratically flickered, unable even to find enoug cohesion for a dream. Just weightless, timeless drifting in the ocean of nowhere, that had gone on since forever. Would continue forever. That ...
There ...
Somewhere on the very edge of infinity reality was coalescing. Like the blood in a wound figments began to clot, to band together, stray threads of nothingness forming a thought. And that first thought attracted others, solidifying out of the swirling nether, teaming up, cooperating, interacting. And the thoughts became conscious.
It ... she ... was waking.
Neurons were firing up once more as the grip of total sleep receeded. She could think again. And she could sense. For the first time in aeons the outside found reception in the windings of her brain. A tugging to her left and right. Acoustic nose. Sound.
Only very faintly though. And far away. Tiny droplets causing faint ripples ina very large lake. A scraping of heavy on heavy. And then, ever so muffled ... voices.
"Told you Mark, one of em switches will open that door" Young that one, brash, confident.
"Yeah Dave, yer a real smartie. Now don't durdle around and let's see what's inside..." That one older, annoyed, cynical.
"Man, I tell you, that must stem from before the Rusting" Again the enthusiasm "Look, that's plastic all over the place. Maybe kept em plague outside? Maybe stuff inside is still intact..."
She could feel now. Feel how the blood again coursed through her veins, every blood vessel radiating agony as the hot red juice of life once again blazed its path throughout. How the icy chill that gripped her limbs receeded in a wake of pain. This awakening was too rude. Too fast. Something was wrong.
"Look at that!" pure excitement "A fire axe! And I bet that head is pure steel!"
"Darn, I think you are right." Reluctant admiration. "Seems it was a good idea to check out that hole in the ground. Better don't show that axe around, though. And let's get going, there must be more..."
Gel. She was resting on a gel cushion that was most precisely hugging her back, a comfortable bedding for a long rest. And she could hear steps now, heavy boots on solid ground. They were coming closer. And then the volume of noise almost overwhelmed her as another door slid open, this one very close. The entrance to her room?
"What the fuck is that?" Booming, shouting, a crescendo threatening to shatter her ears. Only slowly her hearing adjusted, toning down the intensity. "What is in those pods?" "Maybe some sexy chicks from the past?" that one was the Mark again.
"Yeah sure, like ... here..." A sharp intake of breath. In a subdued, shocked tone the Dave continued "Sheesh, that one must have been dead for years. Guess you were right Mark. Be my guest."
"Asshole..."
"Yeah, would have been a wonder if after all that time one of em...wait, that one's still whole. And whoa look at her... What a hot redhead." Rushed steps, then "Whoa, yer right. What a fine ass and tits... How do we open that thing?"
Fingers and toes. She had fingers and toes, and she felt them again. She could sense how inch by inch she reestablished contact with her body, neural pathways conecting once more. Would she be able to move.
Rocking and shaking could be heard, busy fingers, latches snapping. "I think I know how to get at her..." "Yeah, lucky one get to nail that hot babe first..." "Finders keepers, but don't worry, might be inna good mood and let ye have a taste yerself ..."
A boot kicking against something solid, som incomprehensible cussing. "Blast it, checkin for another ... Damn, dead ... dead ..." steps coming closer "WHOA! Look at the gigantic udders on that black bitch!"
Her will had focused, sending the command with all the strength she could muster, and she succeeded. Her eyelids fluttered, and finally went open.
The opaque blur of color quickly condensed into solid shapes, and there from beyond the plexiglass dome above a round face, aged, sparse hair, beard stubbles, double chin, was greedily grinning down at her.
