Wrong. I looked it up because that was my first reaction. The President carries a credit-card sized card with codes that, when used, establish his identity and authority as Commander-in-Chief. They are used in concert with the "football."

The charge is being made by former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, General Hugh Shelton.

If the charge is true, it was a dangerously reckless act by the President whose obligation was to report the loss as soon as he was aware of it. It was an inexcusable dereliction of his duty.

Reagan and CIA Chief Casey didn’t want to have to request money from Congress to fight their wars so they ran a secret government out of the basement of the Whitehouse. The alleged liberal press gave him a pass because he was the great communicator and very grandfatherly.
 
It seems that the righties think that telling their enemies that they have no way to retaliate against a nuke attack would have been the wise decision.

Shelton believes that Clinton put one of his aides in charge of guarding the codes and that he probably didn't even know they'd been misplaced. "The president never did have them, but he assumed, I'm sure, that the aide had them like he was supposed to," Shelton wrote.

Once a month, Pentagon officials stop by the White House to ensure the president still has the card. For at least two months in a row, one of Clinton's aides told the military checker that the president was in a meeting but that he definitely had the codes.

But when the time came to update the codes with new ones sometime in 2000, a Clinton aide confessed that the card was missing. According to his book, Shelton burst into the office of then Defense Secretary William Cohen and said, "You are not going to believe this."

New codes were issued within minutes, and procedures have since been changed. Now the Pentagon official who goes to the White House once a month is required to physically see the card in the president's possession.

That's not how Colonel Patterson describes the incident. According to Patterson, the President himself finally admitted to misplacing the codes and Patterson says substituting new codes was a process that took hours, not minutes.

According to General Shelton's account, the episode took place during 2000. However, Robert "Buzz" Patterson, a retired air force colonel who was assigned to carry the "nuclear football" for Mr Clinton until late 1998 and who first reported the loss of the codes, said that he discovered they were missing on January 21, 1998.

In an interview with The Times, Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson confirmed that no nuclear strike would have been possible until new codes were issued, which in practice took a matter of hours, not minutes as General Shelton claims.

"When I asked President Clinton at the time when he recalled last seeing the codes, he said he didn't know," Colonel Patterson said.

"I said, 'Days?' He said, 'I don't know'. Weeks? 'Possibly'. Months? 'Possibly'."

Mr Clinton normally kept the codes, printed on a laminated piece of card, "rubber-banded to his credit cards" in a trouser pocket, Colonel Patterson said.

Before the loss became apparent in 1998, on the day that Mr Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky was first reported, "whenever I asked him about the card, he had it", Mr Patterson said.

When Mr Clinton first admitted that he did not have the card with him, he said that it was upstairs in the private quarters of the White House.

"They are pretty secure - I was not alarmed," Mr Patterson said. "We called upstairs and had the valets search the President's belongings. They found nothing.

"Then when I pressed him, he confessed that he had mislaid the codes. It took us a few hours to replace them because we had no process in place but they scrambled very, very quickly over at the Pentagon." According to Mr Patterson, Mr Clinton's first concern was that the story would become public - a fear apparently shared by his top military advisers.

Clinton's loss of the nuke codes just magnifies his routine dereliction of duty .

Nixon's been dead for sometime now but the LEFT will gleefully exhume him to kick him in the balls whenever they can ~
