Avoid having them cause problems when someone says that you said this or that to them in a private message.

Easiest solution that I know of, don't do them. Don't send any and don't recieve any. To many problems on these boards have been caused by them being twisted.

Any other solutions?

I don't think that even totally disallowing PMs will solve the problem of people lying about what you said. If they wish to lie about what you said, they'll make up some venue for you to have said it.

Other than that, just be as careful about what yousayin private communications -- PM, IM, or e-mail -- as you are about what you say in public.

Personally, I seldom have this problem, because I don't care what people reveal about what I say in private becuse I don't say anything in private that I wouldn't say in public.
 
I so agree with you Weird Harold and it really bothers me when stuff starts getting made up about someone.
