Reading Books For Pleasure

I'm...reading a book about heraldry....

But I'm just OVERFILLING with random information about heralds and heraldry now. I should download photoshop and get back into designing shields again...

Just added "No Surrender: My 30 Year War" by Hiroo Onoda to my plate. Already almost a quarter of the way through it.

I am currently reading The Monk. It is supposed to be one of the very first Gothic tales.

This is my bedtime book right now.

Thanks for mentioning it.

You're welcome! I finished it not long ago. I wish he had told more about his life after returning to Japan, but I guess he felt that was already well documented.

Hmm, I'd like that too. It's not well documented from his POV. I too would have liked that to be part of the book.

74.) Horns by Joe Hill 3.5/5

I would like to think that if I could hear the thoughts of my loved ones they wouldn't be mean and painful. It would help that I'm not the prime suspect in a sexual torture murder. Then again, I'm a pretty sensitive person. Interesting book to say the least. I read it for Halloween!

75.) Undead and Undermined by Mary Janice Davidson 4/5

Always fun reads, this series is just a lark for me to read. Love it.

76.) The Lost Recipe for Happiness by Barbara O'Neal 4.25/5

I love the warmth and serenity I feel when reading this authors books. Though baking and gardening are not activities that make me happy and serene, I love the idea that if you can find what does that's what you should be doing. Ahhh! Sweet.

77.) The Recipe Club by Andrea Isreal and Nancy Garfinkel 4/5

Dysfunction is not my favorite topic. I do like recipes though. This book didn't get to me emotionally because I've never been that close to anyone in my childhood and even my family wasn't that fucked up. Yay.

October

78.) Still Life by Joy Fielding 3/5

Also a Halloween read. Joy Fielding's books are fun romantic thrillers but just a little too light for me. Even though this one was about being in a coma but able to hear and even more rare (perhaps even unbelievable) process everything.

79.) Chaos Magic by Jay Lygon 4/5

I enjoyed this BDSM M/m book that also seemed to fit into the Halloween Theme quite well. At times I could put myself deliciously in the m's POV.

80.) Ready Player One by Ernest Client 4/5

A fun books for geeks who have a love of 80's movies and all video games.

81.) Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransome Riggs 4/5

Another good Halloween read. The pictures alone are creepy, the text has a great story contained with it.

82.) Mystery by Jonathan Kellerman 4/5

Always good to return to characters you love and explore horrible murders. Yeah.

83.) No Surrender My Thirty-year War by Hiroo Onoda 3.5/5

What happens when you completely buy into your government's fanatical propaganda? You create an alternative world and explain away all evidence contrary to it. Fascinating.

84.) The Ghost at the Table by Suzanne Berne 3/5

This family dysfunction book was for Thanksgiving. I got some indigestion over it. Haha!

Interesting stuff, particularly about Mark Twain. Will have to research it sometime and see if it is supported by evidence.

Does anyone know of any warm and wonderful Thanksgiving novels?

85.) The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson 3.5/5

Absolutely fascinating non fiction book about the mental health industry in general and The Hare Test in particular with appearances by scientology folks, politicians, heads of businesses, mental patents and serial killers.

86.) A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick 3.75/5

Scary. Ultimately a redemptive tale but oh those twists and turns.

90.) The Empty Copper Sea by John D. MacDonald 4/5 Love me some Travis McGee!

91.) Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs 4/5 Nice to be back with this character and her world again.

November

92.) Emory's Gift by W. Bruce Cameron 4/5 Not nearly as good as A Dog's Purpose but a sweet story.

93.) Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen 4.5/5 THIS is the way I like my magical realism.

94.) The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen 4.5/5 Just as good.

95.) Wolf Mark by Joseph Bruchac 4/5/5 Really different and interesting take from a great storyteller.

96.) Downpour by Kat Richardson 4.75/5 New urban supernatural series for me. I likie!

97.) Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich 5/5 Always funny. Always good for me!

98.) Holly's Inbox: Scandal in the City by Holly Denham 4.5/5 Despite the e-mail only format, this worked and was very enjoyable!

99.) First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones 4.75/5 Another new urban supernatural series. LOVE!

100.) Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones 5/5 Even better!

December

101.) The Accident by Linwood Barclay 4/5 Lot's of twists and turns. Glad it was the nilla read at my Fet book group. Glad I read it. Looking forward to discussing it.

102.) Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer 4/5 Oh yeah, mormons who still practice polygamy. I'll be reading more of this story from other people in the future. If only I had a religion that promised me and my seven husbands and fifty children my own planet and godhood! Diplorable how they make people live in the name of religious fairy tales and sci fi.

103.) It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump by John O' Hurley 3.5/5 Light, funny and a bit judgmental about people at times but overall enjoyable read.

104.) The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews 3/5 Cute little book with some good food for thought.

105.) The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga 4.5/5 Not sure what this is based on, maybe a comic book? In any case, I enjoyed it. I rarely enjoy zombie books. If there are more I want to read them.

106.) When She Woke by Hillary Jordan 4.75/5 For me, this book which is often disrespected as a rip off of The Scarlett Letter was better than that. It flowed well. I enjoyed reading it. If there is another, I'll read it as well.

107.) Hotel Iris by Yoko Ogawa 2/5 Kinky. Some promise. Ultimately dissappointed.

108.) The Cat Who Came For Christmas by Cleveland Amory 2/5 Not the book I had hoped it would be. I wanted more about the cat and warm fuzzies. Instead I got too much about animal atrocities and the man that owned the cat. As if you could own a cat. :cattail:

109.) Unsaid by Neil Abrams 4.5/5 One of my favs of the year. Death, animal rights, recovery and more, all wrapped up in a tasty read.

110.) Bumped by Megan McCafferty 4/5 Cute Y.A. book. Funny. I want more please!

111.) Jeanie Out of the Bottle by Barbra Eden 4/5 Barbra would have had a better book if she'd been more candid and less guarded. The dissolution of her first marriage doesn't make sense without more details for instance.

Her ability to turn down some of the hottest men in history is quite impressive.

So is Larry Hagman's mental issues and acting out.

Sadly she blames the death of her son on an adult letting underage kids smoke pot. I think she's pretty far off base there. I think lack of parental attention, divorce and having too much handed to one materially probably did that. I can understand not wanting to face it. The death of a child is my worst nightmare.

112.) Children of Paranoia by Trevor Shane 4/5 Good book though the reason for the war was never given. I suspect there is a reason other than yanking reader's chains. Hopefully a second book will follow.

113.) The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen 4/5 Good but shorter and not quite as good as the previous novels.

114.) The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain 4.75/5 Glad it was the BOTM in another online group, otherwise I'd probably not have given it a good. I'm glad I did.

Thanks!

I've tried to read World War Z several times. I know people love it. I love the concept of it. For whatever reason I can't get into it. I'll check out the other two.

January 2012

1.) The Oregon Experiment by Keith Scribner 3/5

Curiously compelling though I didn't really like any of the characters or even the story. Relationship falling apart, new chance, character that rather love and hate each other and themselves, everyone making shit decisions a good bit of the time, kind of thing.

Reading a bit about Oregon and social activism was perhaps the most interesting part.

2.) Boneshaker by Cherie Priest 2.75/5

Steampunk. Post-apocalyptic. Mkay.

3.) Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor 3.75/5

Mind capturing stories, characters and descriptions. Magical realism. Post-apocalyptic

4.) Queen of the Darkness by Anne Bishop 3.75/5

The second book was the best for me so far but this one was mkay - decent.

5.) The Boy in the Suit Case by Lene Kaaberol and Agnete Friis 3.75/5

European, suspense that I found pretty enjoyable.

6.) Favorite Wife Escape From Polygamy by Susan Ray Schmidt 4/5

Interesting book from another wife of Verlan LeBarron.

7.) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky 4/5

Adorable, warm, witty, Y.A.

February

8.) The Wind Up Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi 3/5

Glad I read it but it was a slow start. The sex scenes (only two) hit my "oh no I hate this but my body is responding" kink!

9.) Nerd in Shinning Armor by Vicki Lewis Thompson 4/5

Not into romances generally but this one was light and funny!

10.) More Room In A Broken Heart: The True Adventures of Carly Simon by Stephen Davis 4.5/5

Liked this one. It didn't make Carly out to be perfect but human. When I read the reviews later people were saying the author got a lot of things wrong and hated Carly, doing a hatchet job. Not my take on it but I'm not up on all the facts either.

11.) One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost 4.75/5

Great urban fantasy! I'll be reading more!

12.) The Frog Princess of Pelham by Ellen Conford 5/5

Silly, funny Y.A. book.

13.) A Thousand Splendid Suns by Kaled Hoseini 4.75/5

Gut wrenching, lovely, and eye opening about Afghanistan for me.

14.) The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie 5/5

Cute, touching Y.A. book.

March

15.) Crazy Enough by Storm Large 4.95/5

I knew she and I were on the same page when in the first chapter she talked about her father calling her to tell her that her mother had died. Her first thought? "Thank god!"

16.) Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation by Eboo Patel 4.75/5

Inspiring and a little too peaceful for me. I'm way into peace too. LOL

17.) Wallis: The Novel by Anne Edwards 4/5

A little too kind to Wallis. Will be reading more on her and the Princes who became King soon.

18.) Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones by Suzanne Somers 1/5

The latest fad in health, aging and beauty. Any fads in this area are almost always unhealthy, full of lies and short lived. This one is mostly B.S. Never was it more clear to me, that this was so, than when she talked about how eating veggie or vegan throws your hormones out of whack and does you in. Right.

Also, there is no ONE RIGHT ANWER to every health, aging or beauty issue.

19.) The Winning Family: Increasing Self-esteem in your Children and Yourself by Louise Hart 3/5

I am an avid reader. Right now, I am about half-way thru A Dance With Dragons, book 5 of the series that started with A Game of Thrones. Its a HUGE story, with so many characters they are hard to keep up with, but a good story.

I've heard that is a great series! I hope to get to it sometime soon!
