For me, this is a song that plays very close to home. I know the common interpretation of this song is that it's about a guy who's stuck in the "friend zone," so to speak. I never got that.

I interpret this song as being about someone who's lost, alone, and constantly trying to find something... a reason, a purpose, a place to belong. He's always looking for happiness in someone else because he's not happy with who he is. He doesn't like himself and he' relies on other people to be happy, but that doesn't work. He's still always hurt, sad, and alone, because he can't see that all he needs is right there inside him.

Mirrormask was a book to movie adaptation that didn't get a big box office response, but it's probably one of my favorite movies of all time. This song closed the movie. I'm almost positive Neil Gaiman actually wrote the lyrics for this song, as well.
