I want to use my PC to record a voice message so I can attach it and email it. This seems like it should be ridiculously easy, but I haven't figured it out and it seems like there would be some litsters who have done it.

Thanks in advance!

For a very short sound bite, Windows includes SOUNDRECORDER.EXE" which will create a WV format file of up to about a minute.

You may need to enable the MIC input in your mixer program -- look in your start/accessories list for a mixer in your sound card software or windows default mixer, Mixer.exe.

You may have a better recorder than windows soundrecorder -- my SoundBlaster (tm) came with "Creative Mixer" and "Creative Recorder" which ar better than windows' generic version, but not as good as specialized recording programs that can be found at various download sites or in computer stores. Either the basic windows programs or the ones provied with your soundcard should be sufficient for what you want to do.

Be warned, WAV files are HUGE, and MP3's aren't much better. If your voice message is very long, you may not be able to e-mail it because of size constraints on your mailbox or the recipient's.

You can download a program called TalkSender . It's freeware. The program automatically keeps the file size down for you (i forget what file format it uses) so there are no issues with most mail servers regading a maximum file size allowance for attachments. i tried it for a while about a year and a half ago. It worked fine. There may be some spy ware/ad ware included with it ... but i really do not recall, as it has been quite a while since i have had any use for sending voice emails, and uninstalled it for that reason (a year and a half ago).

It ran well for me with my choice of email programs at that time, with both sending and receiving. At that time i was using a few different emails, to include AOL, Outlook Express, as well as a small local private ISP email server.
