Catherine Bowman was a third grade teacher. She was tall with brown hair and green eyes, and gentle charm about her. She had just moved from her hometown in Alabama to upstate New York and it had been a change. She had nothing left to confide her to her southern roots. The only thing that she took with her was her accent.
She rented a crumby one bedroom house until she could afford something better. She was an inner school teacher and some days were better than others. Today...today was 'one of those days'. She came home took a long soak in a bubble bath and headed straight to bed.
3:15 that morning
Cat woke up from a bad dream. A dream of being chased. She woke up in a glaze of sweat covering her body. It was just a dream. But something was wrong. She smelled smoke. She sat up in her bed and saw smoke filling the room from under the door. She grabbed her cell phone and called 911.
"911 what is your emergency?"
"Yes," Cat pleaded. "I live at 522 West Main Street, my house is on fire."
"We will send someone to you immediately." Cat raced to the window, but it was hot. She looked around the room for something to break through the glass, she spotted her tennis raquet. As she raced for it, she slipped on the rug and bumped her head. She was out cold. She couldn't save herself.
