I am shocked!

I thought it was just us, the young and badly behaved crowd, that were thread hijackers.

Well, we shall see. Biggles! Put her in the Comfy Chair.'
NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition hijackers. <-- He made me do it, honest.

Whyis it that when a serious question is posed here lately, no one wants to take it fuckin' seriously?

We'd have to know something about Spanish history and the Catholic church. For the other, we just have to know an old Monty Python Sketch.

I hear that among their many weapons were fear, surprise, ruthless persecution and an almost fanatical devotion to the pope. But that's just what I've heard.

So true. But don't forget: nice red uniforms

And Dranoel, best I can tell, Cloudy's gotten some leads. They were better than the ones I was going to pass along. After all, there's only one Spain, one Roman Catholic church, and one, okay, okay, there were two, so split historical hairs, Spanish Inquistions (and nobody expected either one).

Useful things to remember: Isabel & Ferdinand started the Inquisition to drive Jews out of Spain. Jews were given the option of becoming 'New Christians' - renouncing their Jewish faith and living as Catholics. Children aged over 6 were taken from Jewish parents and raised as Catholics.
...

The rich and educated fled in part to the north, first to the city of Antwerp but when the royal couple set up Ferdinand's sister Margaretha as guardian of the northern provinces things got worse there as well. She bungled the job and the cruel general Alva was sent to set matters straight. Torquemada came in his wake if I recall correctly. Most refugees ended up in Amsterdam, thus aiding greatly in what was later known as the Golden Age, the 17th Century in the Netherlands.

The Inquisition in our parts was mostly feared because they were hunting protestants. It was often politically motivated as the lowlands were trying to get out of the Spanish empire and the Catholic Church. Any accusation was taken seriously, no matter the gain for the person who pointed out the heretic.
Golden rule: if you're guilty you deserve to die at the stake. If it is a mistake you are a martyr and guaranteed to become a saint.

Not only protestants were persecuted, the same went for witches. There are loads of sites out there dealing with the witch hunting in relation to the inquisition. That could be a lead for you in searching.

You can't possibly expect a thread with this label to get by untouched. It's just too much to ask, we're only human.
